Volkswagen’s decision aligns with the Indian government's push towards enhancing vehicle safety standards.
Following Skoda Auto India's announcement, Volkswagen India has announced a significant safety enhancement for its vehicle lineup by making six airbags standard across all variants of the Virtus sedan and Taigun compact SUV. This move is part of the carmaker's ongoing efforts to provide safer, German-engineered vehicles to the Indian market.

Here’s the updated prices of the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus:
Prices (ex-showroom, India) | Virtus | Taigun |
|---|---|---|
1.0L MT | ₹11.56- ₹15.60 lakh | ₹11.69- ₹17.88 lakh |
1.0L AT | ₹14.88- ₹16.86 lakh | ₹15.43- ₹17.88 lakh |
1.5L MT | ₹17.28- 17.48 lakh | ₹16.77- ₹18.53 lakh |
1.5L AT | ₹16.62- ₹19.03 lakh | ₹17.36- ₹19.73 lakh |
The VW Taigun and Virtus have demonstrated exemplary safety performance, securing five-star ratings in the Global NCAP safety crash tests. These models, built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, achieved near-perfect scores in adult and child occupant protection categories. The crash tests revealed that the body shells of these cars are stable and capable of withstanding higher loadings, further underscoring their robust safety standards.
In addition to the now-standard six airbags, the vehicles' comprehensive safety suite includes a seatbelt reminder system, seatbelt pre-tensioners with load limiters, ABS with EBD (Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), and rear parking sensors. These features collectively enhance the safety profile of the Virtus and Taigun, making them some of the safest options in their segments.
Volkswagen’s decision aligns with the Indian government's push towards enhancing vehicle safety standards. The carmaker has sold over 100,000 units of its India 2.0 cars, which boast five-star Global NCAP safety ratings. The Taigun has been particularly popular, accounting for 61 per cent of these sales. Notably, 40 per cent of Taigun buyers have opted for the top-spec GT Line variants equipped with advanced safety features.

By extending the six-airbag standard to lower trims, Volkswagen aims to make high safety standards accessible to a broader range of customers. This initiative is expected to encourage more families to prioritize safety when choosing a vehicle, fostering a road safety culture in India.
