Volvo Car India, in collaboration with renowned Indian artist Subodh Kerkar, has unveiled an impactful art initiative titled "The Most Ignored Painting" as part of National Road Safety Month 2025. The project aims to raise awareness about pedestrian safety and the importance of zebra crossings, which are often overlooked in urban traffic.
The initiative's centrepiece is a striking artwork by Kerkar, showcased at an exclusive exhibition at The Stainless Gallery in New Delhi. The artwork visually represents the fleeting nature of zebra crossings, depicting how they are painted at night but quickly disappear beneath traffic by morning. It is a stark commentary on the lack of attention given to pedestrian safety in India’s urban spaces.
"Zebra crossings are more than just lines on the road; they are lifelines for pedestrians," said Kerkar. "Through this project, I aim to spark a deeper conversation about road safety and inspire a greater sense of responsibility towards pedestrians. Art has the power to move people and create meaningful change."
Volvo Car India, known for its emphasis on safety, sees this initiative as an extension of its core values. Safety is deeply ingrained in Volvo Car’s DNA," stated Jyoti Malhotra, the company's Managing Director. Collaborating with a visionary artist like Subodh Kerkar allows us to transcend traditional communication and use art to ignite a powerful dialogue on road safety. This initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to protecting lives and fostering safer mobility for all."
