Volvo Cars India has confirmed the introduction of its compact electric SUV, the EX30, to the Indian market by late 2025. The company is currently assessing the feasibility of locally assembling the vehicle to enhance affordability and cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.
Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director of Volvo Cars India, stated that the company is conducting a feasibility study to determine the viability of assembling the EX30 locally. This move aligns with Volvo's strategy of introducing one new EV to the Indian market each year. Currently, Volvo assembles the XC40 and C40 Recharge electric SUVs, as well as all its internal combustion engine (ICE) models, within India. Local assembly of the EX30 could position it competitively in the luxury EV segment, potentially offering a price advantage over imported rivals.
The Volvo EX30 is the brand's entry-level electric SUV, built on Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, which it shares with models like the Smart #1 and Zeekr X. The EX30 features design elements reminiscent of Volvo's flagship EX90 SUV, including a closed-off grille and 'Thor's Hammer' headlights. The rear tail lamps exhibit unique slatted detailing, aligning with Volvo's contemporary design language.
Inside, the EX30 boasts a minimalist design centred around a 12.3-inch vertically mounted touchscreen. The infotainment system is Google-based, offering compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Emphasizing sustainability, the interior incorporates recycled and renewable materials, reflecting Volvo's commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Internationally, the EX30 is available with three powertrain options and two battery types. The entry-level single-motor version features a 268 bhp rear-mounted motor paired with a 51 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, offering a claimed range of approximately 344 km. A larger 69 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery is available in both single-motor and twin-motor versions. The single-motor extended-range variant offers a claimed range of up to 476 km, while the twin-motor performance model delivers 422 bhp and a range of around 450 km. The EX30 also supports DC fast charging of up to 150 kW, enabling rapid battery replenishment. However, the exact specifications for the Indian market are yet to be confirmed.
In India's luxury EV segment, the EX30 will compete with models such as the BMW iX1 LWB, which is locally assembled and benefits from a pricing advantage over its imported competitors.
