Volvo EX90 Design

With a minimalist Scandinavian look, the 2027 Volvo EX90 is designed around clean lines and smooth flowing surfaces. The high-definition headlights have square “pixel” LEDs, arranged in a “Thor’s hammer” T-like shape. Sensors are integrated into the contours of the body exterior. The EX90 rides on 21-inch eight-spoke glossy black diamond-cut wheels. It has a tinted electrochromic panoramic glass roof that can block 80 percent of the sun’s heat.

Six colour options are available: Vapour Grey, Crystal White, Onyx Black, Denim Blue, Mulberry Red, and Sand Dune.

Volvo EX90 Interior and Features

Volvo says it has used nature-inspired grey-beige materials for the interior, to inspire a calming, relaxing feeling for occupants. With six seats across three rows, the EX90 is designed to be luxurious yet practical. Volvo says people up to 1.7m tall will be comfortable in the third row. There’s ambient LED lighting with a welcome animation, as well as boot illumination.

The driver and front passenger will find storage compartments and cupholders beneath a roll-top cover on the centre console. There’s a 15W wireless phone charging pad at the front, six USB Type-C ports around the cabin, and a 12V outlet in the trunk. There’s also floor-level bag storage space. Boot capacity is 377 litres with the rear backrests raised, and there’s an additional 46-litre frunk space where a charging cable can be stowed.

A floating, vertical 14.5-inch touchscreen handles infotainment, navigation, climate control, apps, camera views, and car control functions, with multitasking. A quick control area has shortcuts to commonly used functions, with contextually relevant controls surfaced. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are supported.

Digital services include Google Maps with charging locations and Google Assistant. Volvo offers free 5G cellular data for four years, after which charges will apply for connectivity as well as the digital features subscription. Owners will get over-the-air updates, digital key functionality using an iPhone, Apple Watch or compatible Android device, remote access and location, remote locking and climate control, and charge monitoring.

The driver has a 9-inch high-resolution digital display with three switchable views showing essential information, map directions, and a surround camera view. There’s also an automatically adjustable head-up display for critical information.

There’s a 25-speaker, 1,610 Watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system for immersive Dolby Atmos audio. Speakers are integrated into the front seat headrests for directed sound in calls and while listening to music. An Abbey Road Studios Mode recreates the acoustic character of the iconic British music production facility. Microphones throughout the cabin allow front and rear row occupants to communicate with each other safely, even with music playing.

Front and middle-row occupants have individual climate control zones. Frequency Selective Damping makes the shock absorbers adapt to road conditions. There’s a built-in PM2.5 air purifier with a cabin pre-cleaning function. The windows are reinforced and laminated for sound and UV reduction.

The front seats are heated with ventilation and a massage function, plus power adjustable side bolsters and lumbar support.

Volvo EX90 Safety

The EX90 has been built using a high-strength steel safety cage with front, rear, and side deformation zones to absorb impact force and limit body deformation in case of a crash. The battery has its own independent safety cage. Seatbelts can automatically tighten if the car detects that it has veered off a road or if collision is imminent. Restraints deploy automatically in case of a rollover.

Dual-stage airbags deploy intelligently based on impact level. Curtain airbags deploy from the roof to protect third-row passengers, and there’s also a driver’s knee airbag. There are ISOFIX mount points for child seats.

A long airbag along the roofline deploys in milliseconds to help provide head protection for passengers in the front and rear outer seats. It also helps shield against debris like broken glass from side windows. Seatbelts tighten to help keep front passengers securely positioned and airbags in the front seats are deployed to help protect the chest and lower body.

Driver eye movements and fatigue can be detected using cabin sensors and a touch-sensitive steering wheel. The EX90 can adjust warnings to suit the driver’s style and detect when intervention is necessary, including automatically stopping.

Other safety features include occupant sensing and alerts, door open alerts, automatic parking, and adaptive LED headlights.

There’s a 106 kWh battery which takes 10 hours to charge from zero to 100 percent using a standard 16A AC connection, or 22 minutes to get from 10–80 percent using a 350kW DC fast charger.

This SUV measures 5,037mm long with a 2.985mm wheelbase, 1,964 mm wide, and 1,744mm tall. In India, it will compete with the Kia EV9 and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
