Volvo recalls over 40,000 EX30 EVs worldwide due to battery overheating risk; owners advised to limit charging to 70% and park outside until free module replacement.
Volvo Cars has initiated a global recall affecting more than 40,000 EX30 electric SUVs over a potential battery overheating issue that could lead to fire risks. The affected models include the Single-Motor Extended Range and Twin-Motor Performance variants.
According to a Reuters report, a total of 40,323 units are involved. Volvo confirmed the recall stems from the risk of the high-voltage battery pack overheating. The company is contacting all owners to inform them of the next steps and will replace the faulty battery modules free of charge.
In the interim, Volvo has advised owners to park their vehicles outdoors and limit charging to 70% capacity to minimise any fire hazard. The batteries are supplied by Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Co., a joint venture involving Volvo's parent company Geely. The supplier has addressed the defect and will provide replacement cells.
In the United States, at least 40 EX30 units are part of the recall. Volvo notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last month that certain 2025 models may experience short-circuiting and overheating in the high-voltage battery. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed on February 23, 2026. The repair will be performed free of charge once available.
Volvo's recall reference is R10355, and owners can reach customer service at 1-800-458-1552. The NHTSA campaign number is 26V001, with further details available on NHTSA.gov or via the hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
The replacement of battery modules is estimated to cost Volvo around $195 million, though the overall impact could be higher if the issue affects brand perception as a safety leader.
