We look at a few mass-market, budget-friendly EVs slated for a launch in the coming months.
As awareness about electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise, more automakers, including mainstream brands, are entering the EV segment. EVs offer significant advantages over traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, including lower running costs, reduced maintenance due to fewer moving parts, and a quieter ride. With the expansion of charging infrastructure in India, EVs are now viable options for long-distance travel, not just city commutes. So, we thought of looking at a few mass-market, budget-friendly EVs that are slated for a launch in the coming months.

Maruti Suzuki is set to make its foray into the electric vehicle market with the eVX, expected to launch by late 2024. This all-electric vehicle has been spotted testing on Indian roads, suggesting a possible earlier release. Built at Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat, the eVX is anticipated to feature a 60 kWh battery and dual motors, offering a range of approximately 550 km. Additionally, a Toyota variant of this model is in the works.

The second-generation Hyundai Kona Electric, unveiled earlier this year, boasts a larger size, more upscale design, and additional features. It incorporates Hyundai’s new design language and is expected to have a 48.4 kWh battery for the base model, delivering a range of 377 km according to the WLTP cycle.

The Tata Curvv EV, an SUV coupe, will be positioned between the electric versions of the Harrier and the Nexon. Having been spotted testing several times, the Curvv will first launch as an EV before an ICE variant is introduced. The model is set to go on sale in July 2024.

Expected Launch: Late 2024
Following the launch of the Harrier facelift, Tata Motors plans to release an electric variant of the SUV in 2024. Displayed as a concept at the 2023 Auto Expo, the Harrier EV will maintain a design similar to the regular Harrier but with EV-specific elements. It is expected to come with multiple battery and motor options, including an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version, and offer a range of around 500 km.
Expected Price: ₹35 lakh
Expected Launch: End of 2024
Mahindra’s all-electric version of the XUV700, the XUV.e8, is slated for release towards the end of 2024. The vehicle might come with two battery options – 60 kWh and 80 kWh – and configurations that include single- or dual-motor (AWD) setups. While specific details are still under wraps, the XUV.e8 is expected to offer a range of 450 km.
As India progresses towards sustainable mobility, these upcoming EVs represent significant steps forward. Each model offers unique features and capabilities, catering to a range of preferences and needs. For those considering an EV purchase in 2024, these options present compelling choices that combine environmental consciousness with modern automotive technology.
