As we celebrate World EV Day 2024, India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape is witnessing rapid expansion, with several key launches scheduled for the latter half of the year. The Indian EV market continues to diversify, offering more affordable options while premium electric SUVs make their way into the luxury segment. Here's an in-depth look at the upcoming EVs, catering to various price points and preferences.
MG Motor India is set to launch the Windsor EV, a rebadged version of the Wuling Cloud, on September 11, 2024. Slotting between the Comet EV and the popular ZS EV, the Windsor is expected to be launched between ₹15-20 lakh, making it a compelling option in the sub-₹20 lakh EV market. Powered by a 50.6 kWh lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) battery, the Windsor EV will deliver an impressive range of up to 460 km, rivalling Tata Nexon EV. Advanced features like reclining rear seats, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, and ADAS will further bolster its appeal.
BYD, known for its consistent focus on expanding India's EV market, is likely to unveil the BYD eMAX 7 by late 2024. This electric MPV is expected to strengthen BYD’s presence, following the success of the Atto 3 and e6 models. While specific details of its battery capacity and range are yet to be confirmed, BYD is known for offering high-range vehicles and cutting-edge battery technology. It will be a successor to the BYD e6 MPV.
Marking Kia's premium entry into India's EV market, the Kia EV9 is a full-size electric SUV that is anticipated to be Kia’s flagship electric model in the country. This spacious seven-seater, equipped with a massive 99.8 kWh battery, will offer a range of over 540 km on a single charge. The EV9 will be priced above ₹1 crore, setting a new benchmark for luxury EVs in India. With dual motors providing AWD capability and a peak power of 380 bhp, the EV9 is set to become a leading contender in the luxury electric SUV segment.
Mahindra’s push into the EV space continues with the highly anticipated XUV.e8, scheduled for a December 2024 launch. As a sibling to the XUV700, the XUV.e8 will maintain its seven-seater configuration and share many features with its ICE counterpart. However, it will utilize Mahindra’s INGLO platform, providing superior battery management and cutting-edge electronics. Powered by a 79 kWh battery, the XUV.e8 is expected to offer a range of 500 km. The model will come with ADAS Level 2, an augmented reality heads-up display, and connected car tech.
Mercedes-Benz India is gearing up to launch its iconic G-Class in an electric avatar, the G-Class with EQ Technology, by the end of 2024. Known for its rugged off-road capabilities, the electric G-Class will marry traditional G-Wagon styling with advanced electric powertrains. This EV will appeal to the premium off-road market, likely offering cutting-edge battery technology and power outputs that compete with the best in the luxury EV space.
With more manufacturers focusing on offering high-range electric vehicles, consumers in India are set to benefit from a wider variety of choices as the nation accelerates towards an electric future.
