Having a clutch on an electric motocross bike might attract traditional riders to adapt because of a familiar control system.
Yamaha patented a faux clutch for electric motorcycles. It could be seen on its upcoming electric motocross bike. This innovative feature caters to riders who crave the feel of a traditional clutch, even on an electric motorbike.
Electric motorcycles are known for simple twist-and-go operation. This may be a positive for casual riders but for competitive riders and enthusiasts, the lack of a clutch can feel like a loss of control. Yamaha's solution bridges this gap by incorporating a lever on the handlebar that mimics the function of a clutch.
While a traditional clutch disconnects the engine from the transmission, Yamaha's faux clutch electronically controls the power delivery and regenerative braking of the electric motor. This gives riders the familiar feel of manipulating a clutch without the added mechanical complexity.
The patent application sheds light on the design of the faux clutch lever. Mounted on the left handlebar above the rear brake lever, it's specifically designed for finger operation. The lever replicates the feel of a traditional clutch, including dead zones at the ends of its travel and progressive resistance that increases as it's squeezed.
This isn't the first time any manufacturer has explored replicating the clutch experience in electric motorcycles. Zero Motorcycles has a similar simulated clutch concept in the works, and Kymco is taking it a step further with a simulated clutch and gearbox system. Even in India, there is an electric motorcycle with a gearbox. Read more about it here
By offering a familiar control scheme, Yamaha hopes to attract experienced riders who might otherwise be hesitant to switch to electric. It also leads Yamaha to build bikes that have rider engagement which has been the core of its products in the ICE world.
While Yamaha's patent is currently for the electric motocross bike, the concept has the potential to be adapted for future electric street bikes. As motorcycle manufacturers continue to develop EVs, features like the faux clutch will be crucial in attracting riders who value a more mechanical connection to its machines.
