The Yamaha R1 and R1M will not be updated to comply with new emission norms.
Yamaha will discontinue the R1 and R1M after twelve months, confirmed Visordown. The marque will focus on other “mid-term business solutions” and future products instead of finding the expense to tweak its flagship bike to meet new emission norms.
The decision to discontinue the bike has been developing for a couple of years now. The winner of the WorldSBK, BSB, and MotoAmerica titles in 2021, the R1 had started to show its age against the Europeans like the Ducati Panigale V4, Aprilia RSV4 and BMW S 1000 RR.

Nonetheless, a major blow for the sportbike market, the Yamaha R1 has been an iconoclast in the marque’s portfolio for over a decade. The decision to discontinue these two bikes parallels a similar decision when the R6 was discontinued a few years ago.

The Yamaha R9 will be introduced soon but it won’t act as its replacement, though. Like the R6, though, the litre-class Yammie sportbike icon might live on as a track-only and racing machine, for race bikes are not currently constrained by Euro emission regulations.
