The Japanese giant has confirmed that the road-spec R1 will be discontinued for the European market.
Yamaha has confirmed that the road-spec R1 and R1M superbike duo will be discontinued for road usage. Instead, from 2025 onwards, these will be available as track-only motorcycles.
Although global production of the Yamaha R1 and R1M will continue as it is, as will the development program that has seen the bike secure World SBK and EWC titles before. The bikes will be discontinued in Europe where Euro5+ homologations are required.

The Yamaha duo isn’t the first set of superbikes to be taken off the shelf due to stricter emission norms. Earlier, Suzuki discontinued the GSX-R1000 too. Now whether more manufacturers follow suit like this remains to be seen.
However, it wouldn’t matter if Yamaha wants to bring it to India as it will arrive as a CBU product and these products don’t have to necessarily comply with the latest emission norms. Like the current R3 and MT-03 that do not adhere to BS6 Phase-II norms (equivalent to Euro 5+), the R1 could also necessarily be sold here without facing the need to meet the criteria for emissions.
