The Yamaha R3 makes a comeback while the MT-03 makes a fresh start in the Indian market.
Yamaha has officially launched the much-anticipated R3 at ₹ 4.64 lakh and MT-03 at ₹ 4.45 lakh. The deliveries are slated to begin by January 2024.
The Yamaha MT-03 design language is reminiscent of the MT-15. It shares a consistent theme with a central projector headlamp and sharp LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). However, the MT-03 stands out with a sleeker, more assertive look, accentuated by small spoilers on either side of the projector, adding to its dynamic appearance. In terms of the silhouette, the MT-03 retains similarities with the MT-15 but distinguishes itself with broader shoulders and wider fuel tank.
The Yamaha R3 does not have the latest design philosophy found in models such as the R1, R6, R7, and even the R15, characterised by a centrally-mounted projector lamp. Despite this, the R3 remains an attractive and sporty-looking motorcycle, featuring a sharper headlamp design compared to its predecessor. The overall aesthetics contribute to its appeal, making it a visually appealing and stylish bike.
The heart of these motorcycles is a BS6-2 compliant 321 cc parallel-twin motor, delivering a commendable power output of slightly over 41 bhp and a torque of 29.5 Nm. While the numbers are impressive, Aprilia has upped the ante with the new RS 457 that produces 48.6 bhp . The other big is slipper clutch and quickshifter, as both these features are available on the Yamaha R15 V4 M.
The Yamaha R3 offers a friendlier riding position compared to the Yamaha R15 with a low 780mm seat height, contrary to its sporty appearance. While the R3 and MT-03 share core components, their individuality shines through in styling and ergonomics. The R3 adopts a sportier profile with clip-on handlebars and an old R15-inspired fairing, while the MT-03 offers a more upright riding position with higher flat and wide handlebars.
Both these bikes include dual-channel ABS, all-LED lighting, and an LCD display. However, it is pertinent to mention that it lacks the more modern TFT unit found in some competitor models.
Both the bikes skip the Deltabox frame for a more simpler diamond chassis. It’s suspended on a non-adjustable USD fork and a monoshock from KYB. Stopping power is courtesy disc brakes on either ends and the initial batch of the Yamaha R3 and MT-03 will be equipped with Dunlop rubbers as they are being imported directly.
In terms of competition, the Yamaha R3 will square up against the KTM RC 390, TVS Apache RR 310 and the Aprilia RS 457. As for the Yamaha MT-03 it faces rivalry from the likes of the new KTM 390 Duke, TVS Apache RTR 310 and the QJ Motors SRK 400.
Do you think this pricing for a 300 cc bike makes relevance in the market?
