The deal highlights ZF's emergence as a key player in India's high-torque commercial vehicle market.
German tech giant ZF's India arm has partnered with an unnamed Indian commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturer to supply its manual and automated manual (AMT) nine-speed transmissions for heavy-duty trucks in the 1300 Nm segment. The deal, signed in March 2025, includes ZF’s EcoMid MT and EcoTronic Mid AMT, developed specifically for trucks weighing over 25 tonnes. The transmissions will be manufactured at ZF's Chakan plant in Pune, thereby also supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative.
ZF claims the EcoMid is an ideal transmission option for CVs in India with a gross vehicle weight of up to 55 tonnes. In either direct-drive or overdrive, its nine-gear configuration helps apply engine power to the road effectively and efficiently. This range of transmissions is also claimed to maximise fuel efficiency and clutch life. ZF India also makes 12-speed transmissions fit for use in the 3,200 Nm torque segment.
P Kaniappan, Senior VP, ZF Group commented, "The EcoMid and EcoTronic Mid transmissions will help drive operational efficiencies for the commercial vehicle industry, particularly in the heavy truck sector. This strategic agreement not only strengthens ZF Group's position as the premier provider of commercial vehicle solutions but also aligns with the market's shift toward higher efficiencies in higher-tonnage vehicles."
With headquarters in Pune, ZF operates in India through 14 entities, including one joint venture, and 10 global engineering centres. Operating for over six decades in the country, ZF India now has 18 manufacturing locations under its belt.
