Sure, fast SUVs are trendy right now, but the G 63’s existence is still somewhat baffling. After spending time with it, though, I started to understand why it’s so special.
When I first got behind the 2024 Mercedes-AMG G 63 wheel, I couldn’t help but wonder what the point of this beast was. Sure, fast SUVs are trendy right now, but the G 63’s existence is still somewhat baffling. Mercedes-AMG already has a lineup filled with high-performance SUVs, yet this boxy powerhouse can hit 0-100 kmph in just 4.5 seconds. After spending time with it, though, I started to understand why it’s so special.
Mercedes has kept the G-Class’s iconic boxy styling intact, even with the 2024 updates. And I’m glad because that’s a big part of its charm. This new Twilight Blue metallic paint option is exclusive to the G 63, and it looks stunning. With the Manufaktur program, one could customise the colour to match his/her preference, but honestly, this shade just stands out.
Mercedes has made subtle changes here and there—a slightly tweaked front bumper, a refined A-pillar—but the overall look is pure G-Class. The AMG-specific blacked-out grille gives it a mean, aggressive front, but more importantly, it helps cool the engine down quicker and improves aerodynamics. To be honest, you’d need a magnifying glass to spot the differences from the previous model, but it’s the little details that make it feel fresh without losing its character.
Stepping inside, it’s clear that Mercedes didn’t hold back on luxury or tech. The latest MBUX infotainment system is here, and it’s as smooth and intuitive as I expected. The visuals are sharp, and navigating the interface is easy—even on the go. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are nice touches, but what really caught my eye was the off-road pack.
This off-road pack has several useful features, displaying all the critical information I’d need when taking the G 63 off the beaten path. And then there’s the “transparent bonnet”—an incredibly handy tool that shows me what’s directly under the front of the vehicle, perfect for rough terrain. The system is ergonomic, isn’t overly bulky, and just works without making me think twice.
If I had one complaint about the interior, it’s the back seat. It feels a bit cramped, and the small sunroof along with the full black theme doesn’t help much. But who am I kidding? If I’m in a G 63, I’m going to be in the driver’s seat, not the back.
Under the hood, the 2024 AMG G 63 keeps the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8, and I couldn’t be happier about it. With all the talk of electric versions on the horizon, it’s refreshing to know this version still has that throaty V8 roar. The engine is an absolute powerhouse, and the numbers don’t lie—it goes from 0-100 kmph in just 4.5 seconds, which is insane for something that essentially looks like a tank.
Displacement | 3982 cc |
---|---|
Max Power | 577 bhp +20 bhp additional boost |
Peak Torque | 850 Nm |
Transmission | 9-Speed AT |
Mercedes has fine-tuned the AMG gearbox and added AMG Active Ride Control as standard, making this G 63 feel surprisingly agile. It’s still a big, heavy SUV, but when I switch to Sport or Sport Plus mode, and those exhaust valves open up, the G 63 transforms into a full-blown beast. The responsiveness of the gearbox is spot-on, and it shifts with an eagerness that feels tuned for the thrill of it.
Taking it off-road was a blast. I didn’t even need to activate any special off-road modes—it felt like the G 63 just instinctively knew what to do. That transparent hood view was a game-changer, letting me see obstacles under the vehicle without ever leaving my seat. I didn’t feel like I was pushing it to its limits; rather, it felt like the G 63 was begging me to do more.
Despite its weight and boxy shape, it feels surprisingly planted and stable at high speeds. The stability and control in this SUV are remarkable; it never felt like it was going to tip or sway, even when I pushed it around curves. The immediate throttle response and the aggressive exhaust note made every drive exhilarating.
On the road, the suspension absorbs bumps and rough patches effortlessly, giving it a surprisingly smooth ride. While tight cornering isn’t its strong suit, the updated steering feedback is sharp and responsive, which gave me a strong sense of control whether I was cruising on the highway or tackling a winding road.
Now, I wouldn’t call the G 63 practical in the conventional sense. The fuel efficiency? Let’s just say I knew what I was signing up for with that V8. And if you’re looking for spacious cargo or roomy rear seats, there are probably better options out there. But if you’re buying a G 63, you’re probably not that concerned about practicality. This SUV is about making a statement. It’s built for people who value style, performance, and exclusivity over everyday usability. And in that sense, it delivers.
With a starting price of around ₹3.6 crore ex-showroom in India, the G 63 is anything but cheap. And that’s before you even glance at the options list. But then again, the people who buy a G 63 aren’t doing it for value—they’re doing it for the experience, the prestige, and the sheer thrill of owning a vehicle that’s as powerful as it is unique.
With the Manufaktur program, you can customize almost every detail to make it your own, so the G 63 can truly feel like a one-of-a-kind purchase. It’s an investment in luxury, and for the right person, it’s worth every rupee.
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG G 63 might not be the most logical SUV out there, but it’s undeniably one of the most captivating. From its timeless design to its insane performance, this isn’t just a vehicle—it’s an experience. It blends modern luxury and technology with an unapologetic old-school charm. The G 63 isn’t about what you need; it’s about what you want.
For me, this SUV is a masterstroke of engineering and design. It defies convention, it turns heads, and it brings a smile to my face every time I hit the gas. And even though there are more practical and economical choices out there, the G 63 has an allure that’s hard to ignore.
In the end, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 isn’t a vehicle you buy because it makes sense; it’s a vehicle you buy because you can. And I’d call it nothing short of G-enius.
