Now you do not need to carry physical copies of vehicle-related documents, as their digital copies have been validated by the Indian Government. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification informing the state authorities to legally recognize the electronic versions of vehicle-related documents (driving license, registration certificate, etc.) stored in DigiLocker or mParivahan app.

This action was in response to multiple issues raised by citizens via RTI applications to the Ministry, demanding the traffic police to consider vehicle-related documents stored in DigiLocker or mParivahan app as valid.

The notification also mentions that the data related to the expiration of vehicles’ insurance policies is being regularly updated by the Insurance Information Board, and it will automatically reflect in the mParivahan/eChallan app. This means that vehicle owners are no longer required to carry hard copies of their vehicle’s insurance policy with them.

In case a law-enforcing agency has to impound a vehicle, they can access the required documents from the government’s Vahan database. Thus, eliminating the need to seize physical copies of such documents.
