The compact SUV segment in India is booming right now, with almost every major automaker launching new models. Two of the latest entrants in this space are the Hyundai Exter and Hyundai Venue. While the Exter is an all-new model, the Venue has been around for a few years now and has established itself well.
Both SUVs have a lot going for them, but which one should you buy? Read on as we compare the Hyundai Exter and Hyundai Venue across various parameters.
The Hyundai Exter's price ranges between Rs. 6.12 lakh and Rs. 10.27 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi). The base E MT variant's on-road price is approximately Rs. 6.95 lakh, while the top-spec SX (O) Connect 1.2 AMT Dual Tone is priced around Rs. 11.188 lakh in Delhi.
Hyundai retails the Venue between Rs. 7.94 lakh and Rs. 13.48 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi). The on-road price of the base E variant is about Rs. 9.01 lakh, and the range-topping SX(O) 1.0 Turbo DCT Knight Edition Dual Tone is about Rs. 15.59 lakh in Delhi.
The Exter is Hyundai's newest sub-4-meter SUV, launched to compete with popular models like the Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Exter enters the highly competitive micro SUV space with its rugged styling, feature-loaded cabin, and efficient petrol engine options.
On the other hand, the Venue has been Hyundai's offering in the mainstream sub-4 meter SUV segment. The Venue sports facelift version has minor design tweaks and an updated feature list to stay fresh in the minds of buyers. It continues with its responsive petrol, diesel and turbo-petrol powertrains from the pre-facelift model.
The Exter measures 3815 mm in length, 1710mm in width, 1631 mm in height, and has a 2450mm wheelbase. Its sub-4-meter length and tall stance give it typical SUV proportions in a pint-sized package. Upfront, the Exter gets a bold parametric grille with the Hyundai logo placed in the centre. Its LED headlamps and H-shaped LED DRLs are positioned on either side of the grille. The rugged front bumper features a metallic grey skid plate and round fog lamps.
In profile, the Exter has squarish wheel arches, side cladding, roof rails and diamond-cut alloy wheels. The rear profile looks neat with H-shaped LED tail lights connected by a reflector strip. The rear bumper gets a skid plate as well. Overall, the Exter looks like a scaled-down SUV with design elements inspired by its larger siblings, the Creta and Alcazar.

The Venue has proportions similar to the Exter, with dimensions of 3995 mm length, 1770mm width, 1617 mm height, and a 2500 mm wheelbase. Visually, it looks less boxy and more aerodynamic than the Exter. The Venue's front fascia is updated with a new dark chrome grille flanked by LED projector headlamps and LED DRLs. The sporty bumper design adds to its bold front end.
In profile, the Venue has a sloping roofline, muscular wheel arches and new alloy wheels. Styling highlights at the rear include Z-shaped LED tail lights, a roof spoiler and a skid plate on the bumper. Overall, the Venue has a more car-like design than the Exter's upright SUV styling.
The Exter looks rugged, like a traditional SUV, while the Venue has a bolder and sportier exterior design. Buyers looking for a mini SUV will prefer the Exter's boxy silhouette.

Exter's interior layout takes inspiration from other Hyundai cars like the Grand i10 Nios. The all-black cabin looks premium with silver accents on the air vents, door handles and gear knob. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity dominates the dashboard. The climate control system is housed under the centrally placed air-con vents.
In terms of space, the Exter offers good headroom and legroom for four adults and an occasional fifth passenger. The seats are wrapped in synthetic leatherette and offer adequate comfort and support. Storage spaces inside the cabin include cup holders, door pockets, and a cooled glovebox. The Exter's boot capacity is 391 litres, which is among the best in its class.

Venue's dual-tone cabin looks upmarket with a minimalistic dashboard layout. The squared steering wheel, electric sunroof and ambient lighting add to the premium feel. Its top-spec variants get a large 8-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, and an air purifier. Passenger space is good for four adults with adequate headroom and legroom. The front seats are comfortable over long journeys. At 350 litres, the Venue's boot space is satisfactory for weekend getaways and shopping trips.
The Venue pips the Exter in terms of interior design, features and boot capacity. But the Exter's rear seat space is slightly better for accommodating three adults.

The Exter is available with a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine generating 83bhp and 114Nm paired to a 5-speed MT or AMT gearbox. This motor is also offered in a factory-fitted CNG version, belting out 67.72 and 95 Nm when powered by CNG. The petrol version promises a fuel efficiency of 19-20 kmpl while the CNG model delivers 27.1km/kg.

The Venue has three engine options - a 1.5-litre diesel (116bhp/250 Nm), 1.2-litre petrol (83bhp/114Nm) and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (120bhp/172 Nm). Transmission choices include a 6-speed MT for the diesel, a 5-speed MT for the petrol and a 7-speed DCT or iMT for the turbo-petrol motor. The ARAI-certified mileage is 23.4 kmpl for the diesel, 17.5 kmpl for the petrol and 18-19 kmpl for the turbo-petrol variants.
The Venue takes the cake here with multiple engine-gearbox combinations to choose from and a very fuel-efficient diesel motor.

The Hyundai Exter is available in four trim levels - E, S, SX and SX(O). The base E variant gets basic features like manual AC, front power windows, steering-mounted controls, rear parking sensors, six airbags and ABS. The top-end SX(O) model adds goodies like an 8-inch HD touchscreen, wireless phone charger, push button start/stop, cruise control, ambient lighting, cooled glovebox, and electric sunroof.
The Venue is offered in five variants: E, S, S+, S(O), and SX(O). The entry-level E version is sparsely equipped with manual AC, power steering, front power windows, and six airbags. Its range-topping SX(O) variant packs an electric sunroof, air purifier, 8-inch HD infotainment system, drive and traction modes, cruise control, automatic headlamps and rear parking camera.
The Venue wins this round by offering more features, especially in the top-spec variants. The Exter's base variants seem better equipped on paper.
The Hyundai Exter comes standard with safety features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder, and speed alert system. The higher variants add extras like electronic stability control, hill hold control, vehicle stability management, tyre pressure monitoring system, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
The Venue gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder and speed-sensing auto door lock standard across the range. In addition, it comes with electronic stability control, hill assist control, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear parking camera and ISOFIX anchors as standard.
Both compact SUVs are neck-to-neck when it comes to safety, with 6 airbags, ABS, ESC and other essential safety tech on offer.
The Hyundai Exter and Hyundai Venue cater to slightly different segments, but there is some overlap between these sub-4-meter SUVs. The Exter makes more sense if you want a traditional boxy SUV silhouette on a tight budget. Its ride quality is tuned for Indian road conditions. On the other hand, the recently updated Venue is an excellent package for someone looking for a more modern and premium compact SUV.
