What is Bank of Baroda FASTag?
FASTag is a device that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making online toll payments from a car owner's linked prepaid or savings/current account. FASTag is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) is responsible for implementing the FASTag programme.
As per official data, FASTag has a penetration rate of about 98% and more than 8 crore users. FASTag is a key criterion for those who want third-party vehicle insurance. A Bank of Baroda FASTag is valid for 5 years after purchase.
Under the NHAI’s 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative, a vehicle can have only one FASTag. The FASTag is attached to the windscreen of a vehicle. FASTag without sufficient balance cannot be used at the toll plaza.
How Does Bank of Baroda FASTag Work?
The FASTag mechanism is part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC). National Payments Corporation of India has been engaged to provide clearing and settlement services for this FASTag Programme.
At the toll plaza, your FASTag Bank of Baroda is scanned and details such as tag ID, vehicle class, etc. are sent to the acquiring bank for processing. The acquiring bank asks the NETC Mapper to confirm the information the FASTag conveys. NETC Mapper is a database of tag IDs and is maintained by the NPCI and NETC Switch. If the ID is not present in the NETC Mapper, it will respond by saying that it doesn’t have information about the tag.
Once the Bank of Baroda FASTag details are confirmed, the acquirer host sends a debit request to the NETC System. The NETC System sends the debit request to the issuer bank. After the toll fee is debited, the acquirer host notifies the toll plaza about it. The vehicle is then free to pass through the toll plaza.
