The RS 3 arrives with refreshed styling, an improved interior, and the same potent five-cylinder engine.
Audi has unveiled the facelifted RS 3, an update that fine-tunes one of the world’s most exciting compact sedans. Just months after setting a lap record at the Nürburgring, the new RS 3 arrives with refreshed styling, an improved interior, and the same potent five-cylinder engine that has been a hallmark of the model. But as competition intensifies with rivals like the BMW M2 and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, does the updated RS 3 have what it takes to stay on top?
The core of the RS 3 remains its 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine, producing 389 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. These figures allow the RS 3 to hit 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds, a performance that rivals supercars from not too long ago. The top speed is capped at an impressive 290 kmph with the optional Dynamic Plus package, ensuring it keeps pace with its high-performance competitors.
The engine’s unique firing sequence—1-2-4-5-3—gives the RS 3 its distinctive exhaust note, which is enhanced by a twin RS exhaust system with variable flap control. Audi has further refined the sound experience, offering louder and more engaging notes in the RS Performance and RS Torque Rear modes, while an optional RS Sport exhaust system delivers an even more aggressive growl.
While raw speed is a major draw, the RS 3’s updates focus heavily on improved handling. Audi has introduced enhancements like brake torque vectoring and a rear-wheel torque splitter, which together allow the RS 3 to hug corners more precisely than before. The brand claims that these updates make the car more responsive when accelerating out of turns, allowing power to be applied earlier without compromising traction. These improvements were crucial in helping the RS 3 achieve its record-setting Nürburgring lap time of 7:33.123, beating the BMW M2 by over five seconds.
The standard RS sport suspension now comes with adaptive dampers, giving drivers more control over the car’s ride and handling characteristics depending on the selected drive mode. Performance enthusiasts can opt for semi-slick Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres for even sharper cornering capability. However, the standard C-rated tyres still offer a solid balance between grip and comfort.
Visually, the RS 3 maintains Audi’s signature restrained aggression while adding sharper elements that bring it up to date. The most noticeable change is the wider and flatter hexagonal Singleframe grille, bordered more prominently and flanked by revised LED headlights. For the first time, buyers can choose from three daytime running light (DRL) signatures, including a checkered flag motif visible via the MMI display. The front bumper also receives larger air intakes with vertical black blades and a new front splitter inspired by the Audi Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak.
At the rear, the refreshed RS 3 features a new diffuser with a central red reflector, mirroring race car styling. The updated taillights include revised graphics and dynamic lighting sequences. Standard 19-inch wheels in matte black are offered, with optional finishes in dark grey or glossy black.
Inside, the RS 3 benefits from Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit Plus, providing customizable displays tailored for performance driving, including torque, power output, lap times, and acceleration. The new "Runway" mode prominently features revs in the cluster's centre, catering to enthusiasts. Other interior upgrades include a uniquely flat-topped steering wheel to improve control during aggressive cornering. Buyers can opt for perforated leather or a Dinamica finish with a 12 o’clock marker.
Seating options include standard RS sport seats in Fine Nappa leather or bucket seats with Pearl Nappa leather upholstery for greater support during spirited driving. Carbon fibre inlays are present throughout the cabin, reinforcing the performance-oriented theme.
