The inline-four 400s are priced nearly on par with the likes of the Suzuki GSX-8R and Triumph Trident 660
Kawasaki has launched the 2025 iteration of its highly potent inline-four 400 cc sport bike: the Ninja ZX-4R. Price for the standard version is now set at ₹8.79 lakh while the souped up ZX-4RR version now costs a whopping ₹9.42 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom India), making the two ₹30,000 and ₹32,000 dearer than before.
And it becomes even more disappointing when one realises that there are no updates to the motorcycles. Yeah, the same engine, chassis, hardware, electronics and features are to be found here. The only new bit is the addition of a new Lime Green / Ebony / Pearl Blizzard White colour scheme on the ZX-4RR.
The heart of both of the versions remains the same 399 cc four pot mill, a proper throwback to the screaming inline-four 400s of the 1990s. You get 74 bhp with the standard ZX-4R, with a couple more horses being developed thanks to the RAM air intake. The ZX-4RR has 76 horses on tap while the intake boost raises the output level to 79 bhp. Torque remains constant at 37.6 Nm and 39 Nm for the respective versions.
The ZX-4RR also benefits from additional electronic goodies like a bi-directional quickshifter, and a Rider customisable riding mode. The difference between the two models arises in the suspension department too where the ZX-4RR uses adjustable Showa components.
It is bewildering that Kawasaki would slap on higher price tags on already pretty expensive motorcycles. It isn’t that the more accessible sub-500 cc offering from team green, the Ninja 500, is priced sensibly either. And in case you were looking at similar capacity motorcycles that gave you great thrills for nearly a fraction of the price, then the Aprilia RS 457 or the KTM 390 Duke do a phenomenal job. And if you are hell bent on spending that much moolah, the Suzuki GSX-8R or the Triumph Daytona 660 will be money spent wisely.
