Kia is expected to sell the old Carens alongside the new version.
Kia India is gearing up to launch a new generation of its popular MPV, the Carens, on May 8. The new model is expected to bring a host of cosmetic and technological enhancements, including a suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), aimed at elevating the Carens’ appeal in the competitive MPV segment.
In a notable development, Kia is expected to sell the new Carens alongside the current version. Sources familiar with the matter suggest that the new model could be introduced with a different nameplate or a suffix to differentiate it from the existing version. Alternatively, the older Carens might be repositioned for fleet or taxi use, a strategy several automakers have employed in the past to extend the lifecycle of outgoing models.
The new Kia Carens has been spotted undergoing testing on several occasions, and while Kia has kept official details under wraps, spy shots indicate significant exterior revisions. The design updates are expected to include a more SUV-inspired styling language, with a bolder character line, redesigned headlamps, a new Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) signature, and a fresh alloy wheel design.
One of the most substantial upgrades is expected to be the inclusion of a panoramic sunroof. Currently, the Carens features roof-mounted air-conditioning vents integrated into the headliner. The introduction of the sunroof will likely necessitate a complete re-engineering of the roof layout and repositioning of the HVAC components to accommodate the new glass panel.
The new Carens is set to receive several new tech features, chief among them being Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera system. These additions are expected to enhance both safety and convenience, aligning the MPV with evolving customer expectations in the segment.
Despite the visual and feature enhancements, the powertrain lineup is expected to remain unchanged. The new Carens will continue to offer the existing range of engines: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Transmission options are expected to include both manual and automatic gearboxes across the range.
In a parallel development, spy shots have also revealed a test mule believed to be an electric version of the Carens. While Kia has yet to confirm any official details, the move aligns with the company’s broader push towards electrification in the Indian market.
