KTM is going to go gung ho with the new 390 Adventure with some serious hardware that boasts of off-road pedigree.
Just a day after details of the upcoming 390 Adventure X surfaced online, we have come to know more information about the other trims of the upcoming KTM adventure motorcycle. Let’s focus our attention in this story towards the 390 Adventure R, perhaps the new middle ground in the 390 Adventure line-up.
KTM is taking the R tag pretty seriously as the 390 Adventure R is looking to be just a step shy from a proper off-roader, something which the 390 Enduro R will cater to but that is for another story. Hence, a 21-/18-inch spoke wheel setup (likely to be of the tubeless kind) wrapped with dual-purpose rubber is what is claimed to be on the bike. Furthermore, the 230 mm wheel travel at both ends is just crazy. In fact, that is more travel than the current Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, and even more at the rear than what the Hero XPulse 200 4V Pro version offers. Plus, the suspension will also have adjustability, unlike the 390 Adventure X.
Since this will be the more technologically advanced trim, the 390 Adventure R will bear riding aids such as cornering traction control, lean-sensitive ABS, and other riding modes, like the new 390 Duke. On the features front, the flagship 390 ADV will get a TFT screen and as seen in the previous prototype, cruise control also might come as standard. The 399 cc engine is going to be carried over and a change in the final drive is expected to suit the adventure bike’s persona.
What seems to be a cause of concern is the seat height which in the leaked documents claims to be 885 mm! That is 30 mm more than the current 390 Adventure. Even if we were to account for the fact that the bike might be narrower than the outgoing model and it might just be lighter too, the seat height will be daunting enough for even the serious and experienced folk. We guess that for India, KTM will have a low seat option that should keep it at least in the same ballpark as the current one.
As for pricing, we think the 390 Adventure R will be slightly more expensive than the current model. Hence, ₹3.40-3.60 lakh (ex-showroom) would be a fair ask, with the 390 Enduro R likely to be priced above this trim.
