BYD’s Seagull EV is a global hit. Should BYD also target India’s affordable EV market to boost its influence?
China’s cheapest electric vehicle, BYD Seagull, has surpassed one million sales in just 25 months since its April 2023 launch. Starting at around 69,800 yuan (approx. $9,300/₹8 lakh), it’s rewriting affordability in the EV market.
The Seagull briefly outpaced Tesla’s Model Y in 2024, topping China’s EV charts. In November 2024, it outsold all cars, including petrol models, with 60,131 units sold in May 2025 alone!
The Seagull’s success stems from its low price and compact design, making it ideal for urban drivers. Its size, smaller than the VW ID.3, rivals the Fiat 500e, making it a nimble urban option. BYD claims it ushers in an era where electricity trumps oil.
Now, the BYD Seagull is hitting global markets as well. It is rebranded as Dolphin Surf in Europe, and Dolphin Mini in Brazil and Mexico.
However, its global prices are nowhere as competitive as those in China. For instance, it is priced starting at £18,650 (approx. $25,000/₹21 lakh) in the UK, which makes it more than twice as expensive.
BYD is already active in India, but it’s currently only focusing on premium models like the Atto 3 and Seal. Introducing the Seagull in India’s price-sensitive market could accelerate EV adoption, cementing BYD as a dominant player.
With its compact size (3.78m long) and a long claimed range for its segment, the Seagull could challenge India’s petrol-dominated hatchbacks, offering unmatched value. However, its price must stay close to its Chinese counterpart.
BYD’s shift from petrol vehicles in 2022 is paying off. In India and beyond, it could change electric mobility with its affordable models.
