AI India Summit 2026: First Semiconductor Production Nears Rollout

On the first day of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said US-based Micron Technology is likely to start operations at its facility in the state of Gujarat later this month, marking a key step in building domestic chip capacity. Krishnan also noted that India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 announced in the Budget earlier this month, will strengthen manufacturing capabilities with sustained support from the Centre.

Launched in 2022, the India Semiconductor Mission has so far approved ten projects. Krishnan indicated that the country’s first large-scale commercial semiconductor manufacturing unit is set to commence production soon.

The summit is being held in New Delhi from 16 to 20 February 2026, with its main sessions taking place on 19 and 20 February.

AI for Inclusive Development

Framed around the theme “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (Welfare for All, Happiness for All), the conference reflects the country's push to harness AI for broad-based and inclusive progress. Officials said the programme combines policy-driven discussions with collaboration platforms, designed to steer international AI conversations towards workable partnerships and "clearly defined" outcomes rather than general pledges.

Extending AI Access

Krishnan reiterated that the government’s stance is firm: AI must be created and deployed with people at its core. 

He highlighted the importance of widening access to AI tools and digital infrastructure so that innovation and economic benefits reach beyond established technology clusters, particularly across the Global South and other emerging economies.

Linking AI Development with Global Goals

The summit includes sessions with international organisations and global partners, with a focus on aligning AI initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals and supporting shared global prosperity.
