Amazon and Tata Motors have announced that the e-commerce giant will add 3,000 electric Tata Ultra E.7 trucks to its logistics fleet, beginning this festive season to support intra-city cargo movement during the highest demand period of the year. The companies call this the largest ever rollout of electric trucks for e-commerce deliveries in India.

As part of Amazon’s ongoing effort to electrify its freight operations, the first batch of trucks will be used to move goods between local hubs and across cities before they are picked up for dispatch. The company already uses electric vehicles extensively for last-mile delivery operations.

Tata Motors will supply the vehicles, which will be owned and operated by Amazon’s carrier partners to serve its logistics network. The rollout will allow both companies to test an electric truck fleet at scale across India. The Tata Ultra E.7 truck is built around an integrated e-axle and features CCS2 fast charging, high-voltage safety systems, regenerative braking, and a crash-tested cabin.

The first batch of Tata Ultra E.7 electric trucks was flagged off by Union Minister of Heavy Industries & Steel, H D Kumaraswamy, in New Delhi. “The collaboration between Tata Motors and Amazon shows sustained demand from a nationwide logistics network, met by electric trucks manufactured in India,” he said, adding “Through schemes like PM e-drive, PLI Auto and PLI ACC, the government will continue to support this transition, and I look forward to more such efforts in powering green logistics".

As the project grows, additional light-duty and medium-duty Tata models will be deployed, particularly to cover major national highways. Amazon has identified specific freight corridors across India that it intends to electrify for freight movement, particularly the 2,800-km Delhi–Bengaluru–Chennai span via NH48. This involves setting up dedicated charging locations at hubs, developed with EV infrastructure firm Yahhvi, of which ten are already operational across India.

Amazon also intends to capitalise on the 2026 Delhi EV Policy, under which the first 1,000 privately owned medium-duty electric trucks to be registered will be exempt from “no entry”

Abhinav Singh, Vice President – Operations, Amazon APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkey said, “Electrifying our logistics and transportation network is an important part of Amazon’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. We have made significant progress in India, with more than 15,000 electric vehicles operating across 500-plus cities. To enable this transition, we are also supporting the development of infrastructure and solutions that make EV adoption easier for our carrier partners and drivers.”

Rajesh Kaul, Vice President & Business Head – Trucks, Tata Motors Ltd, said “Electric trucking in India is moving beyond the pilot stage and entering a phase of wider adoption. With deep localisation driving affordability and a compelling total cost of ownership, zero-emission trucks are becoming a practical business proposition for fleet operators across segments. Working with Amazon India, we are going beyond vehicle deployment to provide charging infrastructure, servicing and operational support. This collaboration will demonstrate how electric trucks can be integrated into large-scale logistics operations, with the potential to help reduce transportation-related emissions. We believe this effort will contribute to the broader adoption of electric commercial vehicles in the country."
