An Ampere Nexus scooter has become the first electric bike to ascend the Koli Hills in Tamil Nadu, a stretch of road known for its 70 hairpin turns and steep gradients, making it a test of endurance. The successful attempt, performed on January 7 this year, has been noted in the Asia Book of Records and validated by officials. It took 22 minutes, 10 seconds to complete the ascent from Belukurichi town to the summit.
Ampere, a brand under Greaves Electric Mobility, credits the achievement to the use of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, high tensile strength steel chassis, both engineered for use in tough conditions. The company also highlights the Nexus’ motor and software tuning which can apply instant torque, regenerative braking, and traction control.
The Ampere Nexus has been put through multiple endurance runs before, and the company claims its battery has been engineered to run across a wide range of conditions, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to 60°C. To celebrate Independence Day in 2025, two Nexus scooters summited the Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, at 13,200 feet.
In a press statement, Vikas Singh, Managing Director, Greaves Electric Mobility, said "India’s riding conditions are among the most demanding in the world, and our approach has always been to engineer electric vehicles that are built for Bharat, not just for ideal test environments. The Kolli Hills ascent is a real-world validation of that philosophy. The Ampere Nexus combines safe and durable LFP battery technology with a robust dual-frame chassis that is designed to handle steep gradients, repeated cornering, and sustained load conditions."
