One’s premium offering takes on what is Ather’s most important offering for its future.
The EV scene in India today saw the introduction of another new product in the form of the Ampere Nexus. Hailed as the brand’s first premium electric scooter, the Ampere Nexus ushers in a new design language with comfortable ergonomics, more features, and better performance. Its credentials are right up the alley of the Rizta, Ather’s first family electric scooter which also gets comfortable ergonomics, and is backed by crucially convenient and infotainment features. So, which is the better of the two?
The Ampere Nexus is available in two variants - EX and ST. The base-spec model has been launched with an introductory price of ₹1.10 lakh, while the top-spec variant will set you back by ₹1.19 lakh. The Ather Rizta, on the other hand, is available in three variants, with two battery pack options. The base-spec Ather Rizta S is priced at ₹1.10 lakh, followed by the mid-spec Rizta Z which is priced at ₹1.25 lakh. The same Rizta Z with a bigger battery pack will set you back by ₹1.45 lakh (all ex-showroom prices, Delhi).
Specifications | Ampere Nexus | Ather Rizta |
Battery | 3 kWh | 2.9 kWh/ 3.7 kWh |
Electric Motor | 4 kW (Peak Power) | 4.3 kW (Peak Power) |
Top Speed | 95 kmph | 80 kmph |
The Ampere Nexus gets just one battery pack option shared between both variants. The Ather Rizta might be available with a bigger battery pack option and a slightly more powerful electric motor, but its performance has been tuned to make it ideal for city riding. Therefore, the Ampere Nexus with its top speed of 95 kmph seems to be the more performance-oriented motorcycle of the two.
Specification | Ampere Nexus | Ather Rizta |
Charging Times (0-80%) | 3 hours 22 minutes | 6 hours 40 minutes/ 4 hours and 30 minutes |
The smaller battery pack gives the Ampere Nexus the advantage of quicker charge time so much so that it takes an hour less to charge its battery from 0-80 per cent.
Ampere has introduced a brand new fully digital 7-inch TFT touchscreen with the Nexus. This unit gets an auto-brightness adjustability feature with a dedicated night and day mode, as standard. It also supports smartphone connectivity which in turn gets you turn-by-turn navigation, music controls; and you can also toggle through five different ride modes - Eco, City, Power, Reverse, and Limp Home – via the screen. Interestingly, there is no mention of call/sms alert feature or even regen braking; and the base-spec EX variant is available with a 6-inch TFT unit instead.
On the other hand, all three variants of the Ather Rizta are uniformly available with a 7-inch TFT infotainment unit, and one ride mode only - Zip. A gamut of features is accessible when the Ather Rizta is purchased with a Pro Pack. The latter in turn further activates features like Google Maps (base-spec gets turn-by-turn navigation), call & music control, WhatsApp preview (segment first), auto-reply to calls (segment first), auto hold, push navigation, regen braking, two more ride modes in addition to the Zip mode, etc.
The inclusion of the Pro package makes the Ather Rizta dearer by ₹13,000. But given the number of features it introduces – the amount is worth it. Moreover, with all the bells and whistles, the Ather Rizta reads more feature-rich than the Ampere Nexus, and thereby more premium as well.
So, if you’re in the market for an electric scooter, we would put our money on the Ather Rizta, based on its spec sheet. As for whether the new Ampere Nexus rides better than the Rizta, will need to be found out when we compare the two in real-world conditions.
