Apple unveiled VisionOS 2 at the WWDC 2024 keynote, a major software update for its Vision Pro mixed reality headset, along with the dates on which it will launch the device in several new countries over the coming weeks.
Apple previewed some of the headlining new features coming to Vision OS 2 later this year. Most notably, users will be able to create immersive "spatial photos" from any existing 2D image using advanced machine learning technology. The Photos app is being redesigned to make it easier to view, edit, and share these photos.
Apple is also working with Canon to release a new spatial lens for its EOS R7 camera later this year, enabling the capture of immersive content and a simple spatial video creation workflow.
In addition, VisionOS 2 includes new hand gestures for quicker access to common tasks such as returning to the Home Screen, checking the device's battery level, and opening the Control Centre. Apple is aiming to make navigating the spatial computing interface more intuitive.
The company is also improving its productivity tools for the Vision Pro. The Mac Virtual Display feature, which extends your Mac's desktop into VR, will now support a larger dual-4K resolution. In addition, VisionOS 2 extends Travel Mode so that owners can use a Vision Pro on trains. There's also new guest user support for easily sharing the headset, an immersive Vimeo app for viewing 8K videos, and mouse support is also being added for increased workflow flexibility.
Beyond the VisionOS 2 unveiling, Apple also announced the eagerly awaited international launch dates for the Vision Pro headset. Following its US launch earlier this year, the $3,499 (approximately Rs. 2,92,390 before taxes) headset will soon be available in several major markets:
Pre-orders start on June 13 in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore; availability begins on June 28
Pre-orders start on June 28 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK; availability begins on July 12
The VisionOS 2 update is slated for release this fall along with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS Sequoia. Apple promises all its platforms will open new creative possibilities and productivity use cases thanks to the company's tight hardware-software integration.
