Automotive accounts for nearly a quarter of TDK's total sales.

Apple supplier TDK, a Japanese components manufacturer once known for its cassette tapes, has partnered with McLaren Racing to expand its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The company, which is the world's largest supplier of smartphone batteries, is now targeting growth in the EV supply chain, says a report by news agency Reuters.

TDK's Tech Used By McLaren

TDK's technology is used in the Nissan e-4ORCE 05 cars used by McLaren in the Formula E electric motor racing series. The partnership will allow TDK to supply key components such as inverters and sensors, as the company aims to leverage the cutting-edge technology within Formula E to sharpen its own offerings.

Automotive accounts for nearly a quarter of TDK's total sales, with the company serving as a leading supplier of components like ceramic capacitors and temperature sensors. As the global shift towards electrification continues, TDK sees significant opportunities across the EV spectrum, including plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles.

“Formula E technology is always at the cutting edge of EVs and we want them to utilise our components so we can sharpen our technology,” Taro Ikushima, CEO of TDK’s Electronic Components Business Company, was quoted as saying.

While some fans remain loyal to the traditional internal combustion engine found in Formula One, interest in Formula E is growing, reflecting the broader transition towards electrification.

However, the speed of this transition remains debated, with Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda believing the global share of EVs will peak at 30 per cent.

Nonetheless, TDK sees significant opportunities in the EV market, with plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles using 60 per cent and 100 per cent more multilayer ceramic chip capacitors, respectively, than gasoline-powered cars. The company's focus on safety, durability, and longevity in the automotive industry can also be applied to other sectors.
