Ashok Leyland has entered the Qatari commercial vehicle market through a partnership with FAMCO Qatar, a subsidiary of the Al-Futtaim Group. The announcement was made at an event held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre on 19 November 2025. The partnership is Ashok Leyland's second collaboration with Al-Futtaim in the Gulf region, following a similar arrangement in Saudi Arabia with FAMCO KSA in 2024.
The Indian manufacturer, which operates as the commercial vehicle flagship of the Hinduja Group, will offer its complete range of vehicles to Qatari customers.
The product lineup includes the Falcon and Oyster bus models, designed for passenger safety and comfort, along with the Boss and Partner series of light and medium-duty trucks. These vehicles are positioned to serve various market segments including fleet operators, logistics companies, small and medium enterprises, and public transportation providers.
A key element of the launch is the introduction of Ashok Leyland's electric bus range, aligning with growing demand for sustainable transport solutions in the region. The firm emphasised features such as operational durability, fuel efficiency, and competitive total cost of ownership across its vehicle portfolio.
“Today is a proud moment as we introduce Ashok Leyland’s best-in-class commercial vehicles in Qatar, in partnership with FAMCO Qatar and the Al-Futtaim Group. Together, we are poised to deliver lasting value through reliable uptime, world-class aftersales support, and a focus on innovation and sustainability," Rajesh R, Head of International Operations, Ashok Leyland, said in a statement.
FAMCO Qatar operates as a provider of commercial vehicles, construction equipment, and industrial solutions within the Al-Futtaim Group structure. The company maintains service facilities and parts distribution networks across Qatar.
Ashok Leyland has operated in the commercial vehicle sector for over 75 years, manufacturing buses and trucks for domestic and international markets.
The Qatar market entry arrives during a period of sustained infrastructure investment in the Gulf state. Qatar's ongoing development projects across transportation, construction, and logistics sectors create substantial demand for commercial vehicles spanning passenger buses, freight trucks, and specialised equipment.
The partnership timing positions Ashok Leyland to participate in vehicle replacement cycles and fleet expansions driven by infrastructure modernisation programmes. Qatar's emphasis on sustainable development additionally creates receptiveness to electric vehicle offerings that might face slower adoption in other regional markets.
The inclusion of electric buses in the launch lineup reflects recognition of shifting priorities in Gulf markets traditionally dominated by diesel vehicles. Qatar and neighbouring states increasingly emphasise sustainability credentials, air quality improvements, and alignment with global environmental standards.
The Falcon and Oyster bus ranges specifically designed for passenger safety and comfort indicate focus on Qatar's public and private passenger transportation sectors. These segments include government-operated public transport services, private shuttle operations, school transportation, and tourism applications.
Bus market success typically requires demonstrating reliability, passenger comfort, driver ergonomics, and maintenance efficiency. Establishing strong performance in visible applications like public transportation provides brand credibility that can subsequently support expansion into commercial freight segments.
