Previously in 2019, Ather announced it would introduce its first electric bike in the next three to four years
Ather Energy has revealed plans to enter the electric motorcycle market within the next 3-5 years, according to a recent interview with Ravneet Phokela, Chief Business Officer at Ather. This news comes as Ather prepares to launch the Rizta scooter, a shift towards family-oriented products amidst rising competition from Ola Electric and TVS. The Ather Rizta family scooter will make its India debut on April 6 in Bengaluru.
The company's initial electric motorcycle is expected to be a sporty commuter with performance comparable to a 150cc petrol bike. Ather previously announced a similar electric motorcycle launch in 2019, but factors like the pandemic, subsidy changes, and new product releases (including the 450S, 450 Apex, and Rizta) delayed those plans.
This new electric motorcycle is expected to launch by 2027-2028, entering a market that will likely no longer rely on government subsidies. The estimated price is around ₹ 2 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it in competition with the Tork Kratos R and Matter Aera 5000. The Revolt RV400 is a more affordable competitor.
The interview also highlights Ather's strategic move towards the family segment, responding to competition from Ola Electric and TVS.
Data from the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) indicates that Ola Electric currently holds a significant market share (34%) in the electric two-wheeler segment for 2023-24, followed by TVS (19%) and Ather Energy (11%).
