The A2 e-tron will go up against the likes of the BMW iX1 and even the Mercedes-Benz EQA as also the Volvo EX30

Audi has announced a new A2 e-tron model family as its entry-level electric hatchback in the compact segment, with a global unveiling planned later in 2026. The car will be built in Ingolstadt and will sit at the base of Audi’s electric range as the brand expands its battery-powered line-up.

The A2 e-tron will join a growing set of compact electric vehicles in Europe and other global markets where demand for city-friendly EVs is rising. Audi says the new model will target customers who want an electric car for daily use, with focus areas that include efficiency, urban use and digital features. The name links back to the original Audi A2, which introduced a focus on city mobility more than two decades ago, and now returns as a pure-electric product.

The A2 e-tron will go up against the likes of the BMW iX1 and even the Mercedes-Benz EQA as also the Volvo EX30. Given that all these cars are already in India and the response that the iX1 especially has received, it will be a no-brainer for the company to introduce the car in India later in 2027.

Production of the A2 e-tron at Ingolstadt is part of Audi’s plan to convert more of its German and European plants to electric vehicle output. Company chief executive Gernot Döllner has described the car as important both for the brand and for the German manufacturing base, as an additional EV line helps support local jobs. The A2 e-tron will be one of two key launches for 2026, together with the larger Q9 at the top of the range.

A design sketch released by Audi shows the basic silhouette of the upcoming compact model, ahead of its full world premiere later this year. While full technical details are still under wraps, industry reports suggest the A2 e-tron will use Volkswagen Group underpinnings related to the MEB or MEB+ platform that also supports the VW ID.3. This points to a rear-driven layout in at least some variants and a focus on range and charging performance suited to everyday use.

In global markets, the A2 e-tron is expected to compete with compact EVs such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, along with premium-badged entry models from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Audi will position the A2 e-tron below the Q4 e-tron on price, to attract first-time EV buyers and those moving up from smaller combustion hatchbacks.
