Maruti Suzuki has become the first passenger vehicle manufacturer to dispatch cars by rail to the Pollachi Railway Terminal in Tamil Nadu.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced that it has become the first passenger vehicle manufacturer to transport vehicles via rail to the Pollachi Railway Terminal in Tamil Nadu.
The initial rake carrying 120 vehicles, including high-volume models such as the Wagon R, Ertiga, Dzire, and Celerio, was flagged off from Maruti Suzuki's in-plant railway siding in Manesar on 18 August 2026 and arrived at Pollachi earlier in the week. Operationalised in close collaboration with Indian Railways, the Pollachi junction was previously redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2026.

The addition of Pollachi expands Maruti Suzuki's distribution network in Southern India alongside its existing railway terminal in Coimbatore. The facility will bolster supply capabilities across the southern region, helping the automaker fulfill surged customer demand ahead of the Onam festival period in Kerala. Going forward, the Pollachi terminal is expected to handle approximately 70 automobile rakes annually, facilitating the delivery of over 11,000 additional vehicles by rail each year.
Maruti Suzuki first adopted rail-based outbound dispatches during FY 2014-15 as a key initiative to lower CO₂ emissions, cut fuel usage, and ease highway congestion. Since implementing the strategy, the company has increased its rail dispatch proportion from 5% in FY 2014-15 to 26.5% in FY 2025-26, accumulating more than 32 lakh vehicle deliveries by rail to date.
