August 2024 didn’t have any surprises as such, with the most obvious names making it to the top 5 list.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM) has revealed the sales data of the two-wheelers models retailed in India in the month of August 2024. While we already know that Honda has surpassed one of its prime arch rivals, Hero MotoCorp, for the second consecutive month. And once you go through the top 5 scooters sold last month, you’ll understand why and how:
Yup, Honda has done it again with the Activa and in August, the Japanese manufacturer produced 2,19,774 new Activa models, but retailed 2,27,458 units (counting the backlogs from the month before). This is quite the year-on-year jump, especially when you consider the brand retailed 2,14,872 units in August, 2023.
Despite registering the second highest sales, the TVS Jupiter at 89,327 units, was quite far off from the sales of the Honda Activa in August 2024. However, from TVS’ point of view the Jupiter’s sales had increased for in August 2023 it had retailed just 70,065 units. Interestingly, in August the company manufactured 64,245 units only, which means the remaining sales came off from the previous order back logs. Additionally, between April to August, 2024, TVS manufactured 3,89,014 units, which again was a jump in production compared to the 3,18, 037 units it produced in the same period, last year. TVS will be hoping that the introduction of the new Jupiter 110 will help in improving sales further especially in the festive season.
At third with the most number of sales and closely trailing TVS was the Suzuki Access which saw 62,433 units get retailed. Comparatively, Suzuki produced 62,869 units last month, and from April to August, the manufacturer produced 3,17,126 units units. Out of which it retailed 3,12,644 units. Either way, it’s an uptick in sales for Suzuki, especially when the brand’s sales were stagnant in the month of July, 2024.
Another Honda that has silently kept on constantly registering healthy sales has been the Honda Dio. In August 2024, Honda manufactured 48,740 units, and between April to August, it produced 1,23,917 units. Out of which, just in August itself, Honda retailed just 34,705 units, and between April to August, only 96,230 units were retailed.
Lastly, the only performance-oriented scooter to feature in this list is the TVS Ntorq 125. In August 2024, TVS Motor Company produced 40,054 units, and from April to August 2024, a total of 1,75,663 units were produced. In comparison, TVS retailed 33,201 units only, and in the last five months, a total of 1,47,506 units were retailed in total.
The list of highest-selling scooters reveals that Indian customers are being safe by going for models which have a reliable background. Right, from the Activa to the Ntorq 125 – all five scooters mentioned above are household names. Interestingly, there are no Hero MotoCorp scooters in this list. However, that is not the case when it comes to motorcycles. So stay tuned to this space to find out the top 5 motorcycles sold in August 2024.
