While Mahindra surges, Hyundai has witnessed a decline in domestic sales.
In a significant shift in the Indian automotive industry, Mahindra & Mahindra has surpassed Hyundai Motor India to become the country’s second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in February 2025. The milestone reflects Mahindra’s rapid growth and dominance in the SUV segment, driven by strong product launches and increasing consumer demand.
Mahindra registered a 19 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in February 2025, selling 50,420 passenger vehicles in the domestic market. The company’s overall vehicle sales, including commercial vehicles, stood at 83,702 units, marking a 15 per cent YoY increase.

Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd., said, “In February, we clocked SUV sales of 50420, a growth of 19 per cent and 83702 total vehicles, a growth of 15 per cent. This strong performance is a result of a continued positive momentum for our SUV portfolio.”
Mahindra’s success story is built on its aggressive expansion in the SUV market. Since 2021, the company has launched several successful models, including the Mahindra XUV700, Mahindra Scorpio N, Mahindra Thar Roxx and 3X0 as well as the new Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e.

Mahindra’s ability to generate record-breaking demand has been a hallmark of its recent success. The Thar Roxx, introduced in 2024, received an unprecedented 176,218 bookings in just 60 minutes. Similarly, the Scorpio N amassed 100,000 bookings within 30 minutes of launch in 2022, demonstrating the brand’s strong market traction.
While Mahindra surges, Hyundai has witnessed a decline in domestic sales. In February 2025, Hyundai sold 47,727 passenger vehicles in India, reflecting a 4 per cent YoY drop. However, the Korean automaker’s export numbers saw a 6.8 per cent YoY growth, with 11,000 units shipped overseas.
The Hyundai Creta remains the company’s top performer in the compact SUV segment. However, Hyundai’s overall portfolio appears to be struggling against Mahindra’s growing dominance in SUVs. The automaker may need to introduce fresh models or enhance its existing lineup to regain lost ground.
Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, Hyundai Motor India Limited said, “With a 6.8 per cent YoY growth in export sales in February 2025, we are witnessing increasing global demand for our Made-in-India products, reflecting Hyundai’s strong acceptance worldwide. By optimising exports, we will continue to reinforce HMIL’s position as a key export hub for Hyundai Motor Company. On the domestic sales front, despite geopolitical challenges, we remain optimistic that the proposed tax reforms in the Union Budget 2025 and improved liquidity will provide the much-needed demand boost to the market.”
