Hero finally bounced back after a disappointing outing last month pushing Honda and TVS back to second and third position.
In May 2025, India’s two-wheeler manufacturers collectively recorded a healthy growth in business. We have listed down the top 5 marques in this regard, which includes Hero MotoCorp, Honda, TVS, Bajaj and Suzuki. Here’s how each of them performed in terms of sales last month:
Hero MotoCorp is finally back to the top of the sales charts by cumulatively retailing 5,07,701 units in May 2025. The going has been tough for Hero as it has been losing market share to Honda and TVS for the past couple months, April sales were so bad that it was overtaken by Honda, TVS and Bajaj Auto. This was mainly attributed to a temporary halt in production at all four of its manufacturing plants. Coupled with an inventory overload at certain dealerships, Hero just couldn’t move its products despite demand. However, both of these issues have been sorted out which helped Hero clinch its leadership title once again this year.
Moving forward. Hero MotoCorp will have a slew of new products that will carry forward this sales momentum. From the newly launched Xoom125R, Xtreme 250R, to the XPulse 210, and the upcoming Vida VX2, and Karizma XMR 250. Deliveries of the Xoom 160 are also slated to commence soon, and this will be one anticipated scooter in its segment that should help propel its sales momentum further.
Honda cumulatively sold 4,65,115 units last month which is a 5.47 per cent drop when compared to May 2024 sales, and a further 3.28 per cent reduction when compared to April 2025 sales. As has been the case for Honda all these years, the Activa and Shine 125 continue to rake in maximum sales volume for the brand in the country. However, this minor sales drop in the country came after Honda became the first two-wheeler manufacturer in the world to cross the 500 million sales milestone and the 500 millionth product was the Activa.
While its commuter offering has been raking in steady sales numbers, Honda also wants to strengthen its presence in the country’s premium segment. The reason why it launched not just one, but seven premium offerings in a span of just two weeks in May. This includes the likes of the Honda Rebel 500, X-ADV, CB750 Hornet, CB1000 Hornet SP, and the e-clutch versions of the CB650R and CB650RR, and lastly, the 50th Anniversary Gold Wing Tour.
TVS has become quite the popular electric two-wheeler manufacturer and it continued to dominate this segment with ease in May 2025 as well. The brand’s EV sales grew by 50 per cent year-on-year from 18,674 units in May 2024 to 27,976 units in May 2025. However, the Hosur-based marque also revealed that the EV supply chain might be disrupted in the future, because of non-availability of rare earth magnets. Bajaj’ Executive Director, Rakesh Sharma had also expressed the same concern last week, and you can head to this link and learn more about it.
However, sales of ICE-powered motorcycles and scooters continue to take in positive growth. TVS sold 22 per cent more motorcycles, and 15 per cent scooters last month, compared to what it did in May 2024. Additionally, while its domestic performance grew by 14 per cent, TVS registered 22 per cent growth with its export business.
Bajaj Auto reported that it cumulatively retailed 3,84,621 units last month. While the majority of these units were retailed in the domestic market, its year-on-year sales performance has been stagnant. Compared to that, Bajaj’s export business grew by an encouraging 22 per cent with export figures increasing from 1,30,236 units in May 2024 to 1,58,888 units in May 2025. Moving forward, Bajaj expects its export business to grow further by 1,60,000-1,70,000 units, and it expects its domestic performance to stabilise by June this year.
Suzuki India's cumulative sales rose 16 per cent in May 2025 to 1,28,896 units, up from 1,11,512 units in May 2024. Domestic sales grew 17 per cent to 1,07,780 units (versus 92,032 units previously), whilst exports increased 8 per cent to 21,116 units compared to 19,480 units last year.
This follows April 2025's 14 per Cent year-on-year growth, with May showing a further 12.37 per cent increase over April sales. The Suzuki Access 125 remains the brand's top seller and recently received a new Ride Connect TFT edition. The company's debut electric scooter, the e-Access, should help the brand establish itself in the EV space as unlike the Honda Activa electric scooter, the Suzuki offering will go on sale pan-India.
