Tata Motors sales not only saw a decline in year-on-year growth but also in month-on-month growth.
Tata Motors has registered a Year-on-Year (YoY) decline in sales in September 2024, with 69,694 units sold. Compared to September 2023 when the Indian auto giant sold 82,023 units, sales in the month gone by have reduced by 15 per cent. Compared to August 2024 (71,693 units), sales in September 2024 have declined by 2.79 per cent.
Passenger vehicle sales have also decreased by 9 per cent with Tata Motors selling 41,313 units in September 2024. In the same period last year, the Indian brand sold 45,317 units. This includes Tata Motors’ ICE models, EV models and the exports. Compared to August 2024 when it sold 44,486 units, Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle sales declined by around 7 per cent. Between July and September 2024, Tata Motors sold nearly 1.31 lakh units, a 6 per cent decline compared to the same period last year (almost 1.39 lakh units).
The brand’s newest model, the Curvv, has been on sale since August 2024 but Tata Motors is yet to release any numbers (sales or bookings received) for its coupe SUV. We have reached out to Tata Motors and will update this story once we receive a response.
Tata Motors exported only 250 units, witnessing a 51 per cent YoY decline compared to September 2023 (508) as well as a 27 per cent month-on-month (MoM) decline compared to August 2024. In the second quarter of financial year 2025 (Q2 FY25), Tata Motors exports declined by a staggering 17 per cent with 823 units exported.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, said, “Industry offtake was significantly higher than registrations in anticipation of a strong start to the festive season, resulting in a continued buildup of channel stock. In addition, electric vehicle sales in the personal segment were affected by the lapse of registration and road tax waivers in key states. Fleet EV sales continued to remain impacted due to the lapse of FAME II and non-inclusion of the fleet segment in the PM e-Drive scheme.”
The commercial vehicle segment of Tata Motors has also seen a decline in sales in September 2024. The brand sold 28,631 units in the domestic market, which is 23 per cent lower compared to the 37,214 units sales figure of September 2023. Even exports of Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles took a hit of 24 per cent, with 1,401 units exported in September 2024 compared to 1,850 units exported in the same period last month. In Q2 FY25, Tata Motors sold a total 84,281 units of commercial vehicles which was down by 19 per cent compared to the same period last year.
