The world’s first CNG-powered bike aims to reduce running costs by half of that of a petrol commuter
As we gear up for the launch of the world’s first CNG bike on July 5, Bajaj has warmed up to the occasion by releasing its first teaser video. We had already spotted the bike several times before doing test runs, but the latest teaser has just gone ahead and confirmed several details.
For starters, as we had rightly predicted before, the Bajaj CNG bike will have two modes: petrol and CNG mode. It now remains to be seen how much range each mode brings to the table with the petrol mode most likely to act as a ‘limp home’ mode for emergencies to make a quick dash to the nearest CNG pump. We say this because patent images revealed that Bajaj had to do away with a traditionally big fuel tank to fit the CNG tank. To cover the CNG tank, Bajaj also had to adopt a single-piece seat design that extends up to the tank, which in turn makes for a practical choice for sure, alongside giving it a subtle rugged appeal as well.
As for the engine, Bajaj has brought back the sloper configuration for the motor. It will be a 125 cc air-cooled unit. Its power and torque output configurations will be in the same ballpark as other 125 cc commuter bikes.
Design-wise, the Bajaj CNG bike will look quite simple. It will boast of round headlight design, that is complimented by a bulbous tank shape in the middle. The tail section will have a sleek look but will have panels to cover the sub-frame. Keeping the bike budget-friendly is one of the main prerequisites. So, it will be built on relatively simpler yet modern foundations with a conventional telescopic fork and a monoshock suspension setup. Braking duties will be carried out by a disc/drum brake combo for the front/rear wheels. Moreover, the teaser video also confirmed that blue will be one of its colour options.
Bajaj has been the master of phenomenal pricing and we expect the same with the world’s first CNG bike as well. So, somewhere around the ₹90,000 (ex-showroom) mark is our guess. As important as it is for Bajaj, this launch is equally important for the entire two-wheeler industry. It has the potential to change the way for commuter motorcycles and also be a bit kinder to Mother Earth than petrol.
