BatX Energies and Rocklink GmbH partner to launch India’s first rare earth magnet recycling ecosystem, leveraging the latter's Magcycle technology.
BatX Energies, an Indian battery recycling firm, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Germany’s Rocklink GmbH to establish India’s first rare earth magnet recycling ecosystem.
According to the two companies, this collaboration aligns with the EU-India Trade and Technology Council’s focus on sustainable mineral supply chains.
It aims to create a domestic rare earth supply in India, while improving Europe’s access to circular materials, thereby addressing global demand for critical minerals in electric vehicles and renewables.
The partnership has initiated a recycling cluster in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh, targeting end-of-life magnets like NdFeB and SmCo from motors and electronics. This facility aims to provide integrated solutions for collecting and processing critical materials.
BatX and Rocklink will deploy Rocklink’s Magcycle system for traceable magnet collection across India.
They plan to develop solvent extraction technologies to purify rare earth elements like Neodymium and Dysprosium, with a zero-liquid-discharge refining facility set for commissioning. The companies will also co-develop patents for these technologies.
The collaboration seeks to build a scalable, environmentally responsible recycling system, and it is claimed to reduce reliance on imported rare earths. “This partnership marks a defining moment in India’s journey toward rare earth self-reliance,” said Utkarsh Singh, CEO, BatX Energies.
A pilot facility is expected to start within 12 months, with a commercial plant planned within 24 months.
Rocklink’s Magcycle system is a reverse logistics solution for recycling rare earth magnets like NdFeB, SmCo, and AlNiCo from end-of-life products such as motors and electronics. It features a traceable collection network using a “Box-in-the-Box” system, enabling easy, compliant magnet scrap collection.
The system supports integrated processes from collection to solvent extraction, producing high-purity rare earth oxides. It is claimed to ensure environmentally responsible recycling, reducing reliance on mining and supporting a circular economy for critical minerals in electric vehicles and renewables.
