BMW's feat comes at a time when tech billionaire Elon Musk-owned Tesla has eaten into the market share of luxury carmakers in the country.
Carmaker BMW which dominates India's luxury electric vehicle (EV) market, has witnessed bumper EV sales and emerged as one of the top EV makers in the country. Speaking to ACKO Drive, a top company executive explained a significant shift in consumer preferences within the premium automobile segment.
The key BMW executive revealed that growing demand for EVs is the most prominent trend currently reshaping India's luxury vehicle landscape.
"Coming to some of the trends that you spoke about, I think one big trend, which is catching up in luxury, is the electric vehicles. At BMW, we were about 8 per cent penetration in 2024, and in 2025, we moved to 21 per cent," Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO, BMW Group India told ACKO Drive on Thursday.
EV sales comprised 8 per cent of the luxury carmaker's overall sales in 2025. Watch the full interview with Brar in the video embedded below.
BMW's feat comes at a time when tech billionaire Elon Musk-owned Tesla has eaten into the market share of luxury carmakers in the country. Notably, there is increased competition in India's premium automotive segment.
"And now we are 21 per cent, so you wouldn't have seen such a huge jump anywhere else. I think the mass market is known from 3 per cent to 4 per cent. Luxury has moved from 8 to 10 per cent, but our growth has been phenomenal. We are pulling up the overall average for the luxury. And one of the reasons has been, the IX1, which was the new launch last year, I think people love the new design of the car," Brar noted.
The EV success contributed to BMW Group India's strongest annual performance on record.
BMW Group India recorded its strongest annual car sales performance, and sold 18,001 units during calendar year (CY) 2025, marking a 14 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase.
The German luxury carmaker sold 17,271 BMW units alongside 730 MINI vehicles throughout the year. Additionally, BMW Motorrad dispatched 5,841 motorcycles during the same period.
Also, BMW India maintains its position as the country's top luxury electric vehicle manufacturer, commanding a 60 per cent market share in the premium EV segment. The luxury electric vehicle sector witnessed total sales of 5,116 units in 2025, with BMW capturing 65 per cent of this market.
Looking ahead, the company has set ambitious targets to strengthen its position within BMW's global network.
Explaining where BMW Group India stand in terms of its subsidiaries globally, the top company executive explained: "We have just broke into the top 20 now, this year, and the plan is to go to the top 15 by end of this decade. Because the moment you are in top 15- 20 markets, you gain a lot of attention. And I think everybody knows that India is the next frontier which can explode from luxury vehicles viewpoint. So there's a lot of focus from Munich on India, and we look forward to more action in India."
