The owner of a 2024 BMW M4 Competition Convertible in the US has posted online about a staggering $9,021 bill for replacing a single headlight, eliciting shocked and amused reactions from fellow high-end car owners. That works out to approximately ₹8,29,395 at today’s exchange rate. The bill amount includes parts, labour, and sales tax for one laser headlight assembly.

The Reddit user /u/eSJayPee who posted the bill last month commented that the headlight needed to be replaced due to a broken seal, adding that they did not have to pay out of pocket as insurance covered the cost. Replying to other users’ comments, they stated that the overall cost of the car was around $102,000 (approximately ₹93,74,600), making this seemingly simple replacement about eight percent of its total purchase price.

The M4 Competition M xDrive is currently on sale in India starting at ₹1,55,50,000, while the M4 CS is listed starting at 1,78,80,000 (ex-showroom). Options such as special paint colours can add up to ₹2,85,000 to the sticker price, while leather trim Merino upholstery can add another ₹4,55,000.

In addition to the headlight itself, the user was billed for a new LED turn signal, a control unit, a locking mechanism, and a “core return”, according to the screenshots they posted of the final bill.

It’s likely that the process of replacing the headlight required removing and reinstalling the car’s entire front bumper. Laser headlights also need to be calibrated and aligned. Carscoops, which spotted the discussion online, suggests that it might have been possible for the owner to reseal the faulty unit or replace it themself.

In addition to several comments expressing disbelief and amusement, some users in the Reddit thread were particularly outraged about the labour charge, which came to $1,788 (approximately ₹1,64,330) was excessive for less than a full day’s work. Others pointed out that they could buy an entire new car in the US for the cost of a pair of new BMW M4 laser headlights.
