BMW Motorrad has unveiled the Vision K18, a concept bike that it says demonstrates a “new expression of performance, luxury and dynamism”. The one-off Vision K18 was unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como, like last year's Concept RR.

While it is a concept, the BMW Motorrad Vision K18 could influence the design of future  performance touring bikes with its dramatic styling. The company says it wants to convey a sensual, emotional, radical side of long-distance biking, combined with technical excellence.

BMW Motorrad designers shaped the bike’s entire body around its 1,800 cm³ inline six-cylinder engine, celebrating the drivetrain as a visible, tangible feature breaking out from an elongated, sculptural base. The team’s central design statement was “The Heat of Speed”, going as far as to incorporate a haze effect that makes the engine’s performance visible.

The bike is also designed to look dynamic, with forward momentum even when parked, taking cues from high-speed aircraft such as the Concorde. There are distinct references to the inline-six engine: six intakes, six tailpipes and six LED headlights. Several of the aluminium body parts have been planished, or formed by hand, including a seamless side panel that’s more than 2m long and looks like it has been cast from a single piece of metal. Some structures have been created by flame spraying to create unique accents. There’s also contrasting forged carbon.

Technical elements such as the intake, hydraulically lowerable suspension, and actively cooled headlight, have deliberately been made visually striking. The positions of the airbox and tank have been swapped, to achieve a flat rear line.

In a statement, Markus Flasch, CEO BMW Motorrad, said “With the BMW Motorrad Vision K18, we show how we interpret performance, luxury and emotion in a new, very confident way. For us, the inline six-cylinder is far more than an engine — it is a statement. The Vision K18 translates this power into a sculptural form that makes dynamism and speed tangible even at a standstill. This bike stands for our passion to redefine the boundaries of design and performance repeatedly.”
