SMK Typhoon Helmet Receives 4-Star SHARP Safety Rating

SMK Helmets has become the first Indian helmet manufacturer to receive a 4-Star safety rating from the UK's SHARP (Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme), for its Typhoon full-face helmet. Established by the UK Department for Transport in 2007, SHARP was created to provide riders with safety information that goes beyond mandatory certification standards such as ECE 22.05 and ECE 22.06.

Unlike regulatory approvals that determine whether a helmet passes or fails, SHARP subjects helmets to a comprehensive series of impact tests before awarding a rating out of five stars. For every helmet model tested, SHARP purchases units directly from UK retailers and conducts 32 impact tests across seven helmet samples in different sizes. The helmets are struck at five impact zones and three impact speeds—6, 7.5 and 8.5 metres per second—to measure the forces transmitted to the rider's head.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Sidhartha Bhushan Khurana, Managing Director & CEO at SMK said, “SMK has engineered helmets around top protection for years – The SHARP rating is simply independent, public validation of that approach. The Typhoon's score reflects a standard we've held ourselves to well before any external test came along to measure it: materials, construction and design built to perform, not just to pass. Indian riders deserve helmets tested to the same yardstick as the world's best-known brands, and this is a step toward making that the norm rather than the exception.”

The SMK Typhoon is built around an Energy-Impact-Resistant Thermoplastic (EIRT) shell and weighs approximately 1.6kg. It comes equipped with features including a quick-release buckle, an integrated drop-down sun visor, a Pinlock 30-ready visor, anti-scratch visor coating and a multi-point ventilation system. The helmet is certified to the latest ECE 22.06 safety standard and is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to XXXL. In India, the Typhoon is sold through SMK's authorised dealer network and online platforms, with prices starting at ₹5,200.

The SHARP recognition also comes at a time when SMK is expanding its international presence beyond retail markets. Earlier this year, the company entered global motorsport as the technical helmet sponsor for the Moto4 Latin Cup. SMK helmets are currently sold in more than 40 countries, while parent company Studds Accessories markets its Studds and SMK brands across more than 70 countries combined.
