BMW has revealed new details about its first electric M3, confirming a four-motor setup, over 100 kWh battery, and a 2027 launch.
BMW has shared fresh details about its upcoming electric M3, giving enthusiasts a clearer picture of what to expect before its official debut.
The company has been teasing an all-electric M-series model since 2022, with multiple camouflaged prototypes spotted undergoing testing. While it was already known that the car would feature a four-motor layout, finely tuned dynamics and advanced software, the latest update sheds more light on the technology underpinning BMW’s first electric M3.
The electric M3 has been engineered from the ground up on BMW’s new M eDrive platform, which draws heavily from the sixth-generation Neue Klasse architecture. Each wheel is driven by its own electric motor, with two motors at the front and two at the rear. This configuration allows BMW to combine the advantages of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with the ability to disengage the front axle when required.
Control of the four motors is handled by M-specific software, along with BMW M Dynamic Performance Control. According to the company, these electric drive units are the most powerful ever fitted to an M production car. However, BMW has not released any output figures.
Energy is supplied by a high-voltage battery with more than 100 kWh of usable capacity, though exact specifications remain undisclosed. As with other electric performance cars, BMW plans to offer multiple drive modes, simulated gear shifts and a bespoke sound profile to enhance driver engagement, similar to features seen on Hyundai’s N-branded electric models.
BMW has confirmed that the electric M3 will arrive in 2027, marking the first fully electric vehicle from the M division. According to the brand, the next-generation electric M models aim to set new benchmarks in the high-performance segment.
