The off-road focused motorcycle was recently spotted on test as well
In a recent interview, BMW Motorrad chief Markus Flasch confirmed the development of a new GS motorcycle, likely to be named the R 12 GS. This news comes on the back of recent spy shots of the bike captured on testing duties.
The new GS will be a true enduro motorcycle built for tackling tough terrain. It will borrow the 1,170cc air-cooled boxer-twin engine from the 2023 R 12 nineT. It is expected to undergo some retuning for enhanced low-end power and a wider torque curve, which will help the bike’s cause while going off-roading. Currently, the engine makes 109 bhp and 115 Nm on the roadster.
The engine will be housed in a new tubular steel frame designed for off-road capability. One can expect a long-travel suspension system. According to an international publication, it is likely that this GS will have roughly 200-250 mm wheel travel and a substantial ground clearance as well. The 21-/17-inch knobby tyres further add to the bike's off-road prowess.
An official unveiling date remains unconfirmed. However, with BMW Motorrad returning to the EICMA show in Milan later this year and the Intermot show in Germany also on the calendar a late 2024 reveal is highly anticipated. This is when we can expect to see a production-ready model and receive more concrete information about the new GS.
