Brad Pitt has commenced filming the Formula One movie he is producing for Apple TV+ in collaboration with Lewis Hamilton’s production company. The film, rumoured to be called Apex, has started shooting at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix taking place this weekend. Pitt’s APXGP car took its first laps on the iconic track where the American actor will play the role of Sonny Hayes alongside Damson Idris, who plays Joshua Pearce. Even the fictional pit garage for the fictional team was revealed during filming.

The plot of the film is similar to Fernando Alonso’s story, where Pitt’s character is an ageing F1 veteran who returns to the grid to mentor a young rookie driver, played by Idris, for one final season.
The official F1 website was given a preview of the car, though it is unclear who was behind the wheel. It is a Formula 2 car modified by Mercedes to resemble an F1 car while also accommodating film cameras. Of course, Mercedes is Hamilton’s team, with whom he has won six of his seven F1 world titles.
The film is co-produced by Lewis Hamilton and Jerry Bruckheimer, who has worked with Pitt many times and is well known as the producer of the Top Gun franchise. McLaren’s F1 boss Zak Brown believes this film demonstrates F1’s growing popularity.
“I think definitely [it will have a big impact],” he said. “I think we all wanted to be a pilot after watching Top Gun, and I think it will have the same impact on the audience; it’s a lot of the same producers.
“It’s a massive production, and I think it will get a lot of current fans excited. But I think a lot of people who don’t follow the sport will see it and think it’s unbelievable.
“I think the technology they’re going to use will make it a racing movie unlike anything we’ve ever seen before in terms of its realism, and it will be another shot in the arm for Formula 1 worldwide and motor racing as a whole,” he added.
