A new report out of South Korea has underscored Samsung's intention to develop next-generation tandem OLED panels for vehicle display systems.

Responding directly to surging demand from global car manufacturers, Samsung plans a major upgrade to its in-car display technology.

The Tandem Advantage

Tandem OLED technology provides critical benefits compared to older single-stack OLEDs. 

These panels feature two stacked layers of light-emitting RGB material. This design delivers dramatically improved durability, essential for screens that cannot be easily replaced within a vehicle's lifespan. 

It also boosts brightness significantly, improving readability for drivers under various lighting conditions, including direct sunlight. While reduced power consumption is a benefit, durability and brightness are seen as paramount for premium automotive applications.

Responding to Industry Needs

The automotive industry, particularly in the premium segment, is rapidly increasing its demand for high-quality, durable display technology. Samsung Display aims to secure a larger portion of this lucrative and expanding market. 

The company has prior experience in this area, having supplied tandem OLED displays to Audi in relatively small quantities. 

Furthermore, Samsung recently acted as a key supplier of tandem OLED panels for Apple's 2024 iPad Pro models, demonstrating established production scale and technical expertise in this specific display type.

Flexible Displays for Premium Cars

Samsung's plans extend beyond just boosting current technology. Reports indicate the company is also developing flexible tandem OLED panels. 

These highly innovative displays are expected to target upper-tier automotive customers looking for cutting-edge, non-flat screen solutions for future vehicle interiors. Increasing capacity for these advanced panels is a key part of Samsung's strategy.

Samsung Display's strategic focus on expanding tandem and flexible OLED production highlights its ambition in the growing automotive display market.
