Hyundai’s commitment with regards to hydrogen aims to off-take 3 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2035.
At the ongoing 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Hyundai presented its vision for the future for a “hydrogen-powered, software-driven transformation that will find applications beyond mobility. The marque presented the vision under its theme 'Ease every way’ and it is in line with its 'Progress for Humanity'.
Hyundai had already announced its commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and hydrogen will play a crucial role in this roadmap. The company further expanded on the same with its HTWO or Hydrogen value chain solution. This will see the brand transition from a fuel cell system into a value chain business brand as a result of which Hyundai proclaims will be able to off-take 3 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2035.
Therefore each stage of the entire clean hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to transportation and utilisation will be encompassed by HTWO. This will lead to the formation of a hydrogen grid structure (much like the charging grid for EVs) that will be tailored for end-to-end hydrogen solutions.
As part of this program, Hyundai is also developing a megawatt-scale polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer manufacturing capabilities for green hydrogen production. This is expected to be commercialised within the next few years. The group will be working on resource circulation hydrogen production which will transform environmental pollutants into hydrogen. As part of this mission, the group is actively working with different countries, starting with Indonesia.
In Indonesia, Hyundai will begin with Waste-to-Hydrogen, which will enable the city to establish its own hydrogen production mini-hubs, which again will in turn eliminate the need to transport and store hydrogen. In addition to that, Hyundai is also actively involved in hydrogen-related demonstration projects in the USA, where it plans to establish two HTWO grids.
It has already started to work with the state of Georgia on Clean Logistic Projects. Where they will develop a hydrogen mobility value chain at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). This will be a dedicated EV factory with the capacity to manufacture 300,000 EVs annually. This initiative will further help establish the foundations of hydrogen infrastructure in the USA, and will also stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities.
