The CES trade show takes place in Las Vegas, USA, this week
CES is North America’s biggest technology trade show, and it’s one of the most important in the world because it happens right at the beginning of each calendar year, allowing companies to show off their ideas and set the tone for what’s to come. This is where we can see trends born, and get an idea of what the ecosystem is going to look like. The focus has traditionally been on personal and home media products such as TVs, but you can also see home appliances, laptops, and accessories. In past years, we’ve seen cutting-edge experiments in VR, 3D media, gaming, robotics, 5G, automobiles, infrastructure, IoT and smart gadgets.
As more and more products become digitally connected and with AI now popping up everywhere, CES 2024 will span 2.5 million square feet across Las Vegas, be filled with exhibits and we’ll hear plenty of announcements from small startups, educational institutions, consulting firms, and companies in fields as diverse as medicine, agriculture, education, travel, broadcasting, beauty, aerospace, and cybersecurity.
Here’s a quick rundown of the leaks and teasers we’ve already seen, plus a list of the biggest brands that will be holding major press conferences and events.
Nvidia will have one of the earliest press conferences, at which it will almost certainly unveil a refreshed GeForce RTX 40 Super series of GPUs. We’re expecting slightly better specifications than the current GeForce RTX 40 models, and the latest leaks indicate that prices could actually be quite reasonable. This could also mean price cuts on the older models. Nvidia will also undoubtedly have a lot to say about AI, since its datacentre GPUs care currently some of the most sought-after chips in the industry.
Hot off the launch of its next-gen Core Ultra laptop CPUs and Xeon workstation chips with AI hardware baked in, Intel will be showing off laptops from all its partner OEMs at CES 2024. CEO Pat Gelsinger is hosting a keynote on January 9, during which he’ll talk about Intel’s future product and manufacturing service roadmaps, plus of course AI. There’s also a scheduled session about automotive intelligence and the “future of driving” with top Intel and GM spokespeople.
Home hydroponics appliances were a big hit at CES 2023
AMD usually unveils new CPUs and GPUs each January at CES, and this year we are most likely to see Ryzen 8000G series desktop APUs and as well as new models in its Radeon RX 7000 series for desktops and laptops. CEO Dr Lisa Su will host a keynote devoted to AI, which will touch upon AMD’s offerings in the datacentre and infrastructure markets as well as PCs. The company’s recently announced SoCs for automotive infotainment and autonomous driving.
On-device AI capabilities will be a big focus for Qualcomm. The company could make announcements about the future of its Snapdragon processors for laptops and vehicles in addition to smartphones. Expect a lot of talk about how AI is transforming our lives, including its impact on privacy and security.
Samsung has just announced a collaboration with Tesla for its SmartThings IoT ecosystem, and will unveil a smart home and connected car platform with Hyundai. The company also teased a new lineup of Odyssey gaming monitors, new robot vacuum cleaners, and AI-enhanced kitchen experiences. Samsung also runs a startup incubator called C-Labs, which will have a bigger presence than ever before addressing areas ranging from AI to healthcare, fashion, and 3D design. However, the company’s big smartphone announcements, including the launch of the Galaxy S24 series, will happen at its own Unpacked event, scheduled for January 17.
The South Korean giant will show off its next-gen autonomous driving and in-vehicle infotainment solutions, co-developed with Magna. An ambitious new “Zero Labour Home” concept envisions AI in the form of a rolling, two-legged “smart agent” which can act as a security monitor, companion, and home manager. There’s also a new version of the webOS smart TV platform plus a new push into content and apps. Of course, there will be new OLED and QNED mini-LED TVs with AI picture and audio enhancement. New 4K projectors and smart monitors have already been pre-announced, and the latest Gram laptops with Intel Core Ultra CPUs will be on display. The latest version of the LG Styler home laundry station gets a handheld steamer and enhanced dust removal.
Sony and Honda unveiled their Afeela concept car at CES 2023
Sony and Honda have been collaborating on a vehicle brand, Afeela, for the past few years. We hope to see the latest developments and get some updates about how plans are progressing. The first production model is currently scheduled to hit the US and Japan markets in 2026. As for Sony’s usual consumer electronics, leaks suggest that there won’t be any totally new TV lineup at the show, but we can expect cameras, PlayStation software and accessories, and other goodies.
We can expect plenty of new laptops based on Intel’s Core Ultra CPUs and several featuring AMD’s recently announced Ryzen 8040 series. AI PC branding will be everywhere, as companies unite to create hype for marketing. It might be too soon in the year to see Arm-based laptops, but hopefully Microsoft will begin talking about its plans for Windows on Arm — or Windows 12, if rumours are to be believed.
Gaming is sure to be a big focus and we’ve already seen multiple gaming monitor announcements from the likes of Dell, LG, Samsung, and BenQ, with refresh rates as high as 480Hz. More manufacturers will show off their own handheld gaming consoles, most notably MSI. Razer also always shows off new hardware, concepts, and experiments.
AI is undoubtedly going to be the biggest buzzword at CES 2024. Not only will there be dozens of conference sessions around the topic, but as we’ve already seen, AI provides startups with a whole new universe of potential ideas to develop, and maybe the next billion-dollar company is about to be born. CES is where new experiences can be tested, and if they surprise and delight attendees enough, we’ll soon see a lot of investment in games, tools for work, medical devices, industrial equipment, among many other things.
Expect a lot of “smart” devices and accessories, especially now that 5G connectivity is widely available across the world. Healthcare and automotive are two sectors that will get a lot of attention, as they continue to adopt technology and as customers expect experiences that become part of their digital lives.
Aside from product manufacturers, several service providers, software developers, broadcasters, financial institutions, telecom operators, and tech investors will be at CES.
