Nearly two years after Toyota hinted at a compact, rugged SUV during the Land Cruiser 250 debut, new evidence suggests the automaker is progressing with development. A recently uncovered patent filing may offer the clearest look yet at what could become the next-generation Toyota FJ Cruiser—or a new nameplate altogether.
The image, first discovered by Top Gear Philippines, stems from a design patent Toyota submitted to the Philippines’ Intellectual Property Office in January 2024. The filing had gone unnoticed until recently, but the timing aligns with Toyota’s earlier teasers and trademark activity.

The vehicle's design closely mirrors the shadowy outline teased in 2023, reinforcing speculation that this is the same small SUV shown during the Land Cruiser 250's debut presentation. Though the patent image offers no technical details, the design suggests a strong focus on off-road utility: short overhangs, high ground clearance, and a liftgate-mounted spare tire hint at a rugged intent.
However, some proportions raise questions. The D-pillar appears unusually wide, likely reducing rear visibility, while the rear bumper's heavy cladding and small-looking wheels may suggest a base-spec model. Absent are design features like fog lamps or roof rails, likely omitted for this stripped-back patent version.
Toyota filed a U.S. trademark for the name “Land Cruiser FJ” shortly after the original teaser in 2023. That move sparked speculation about a spiritual successor to the FJ Cruiser, which was discontinued in most global markets over a decade ago. The vehicle in the patent bears a resemblance to the Compact Cruiser EV concept unveiled in 2022, though the latest reports suggest the production version will run on petrol and hybrid powertrains, not a full-electric setup.

This could place the new model as a smaller, more accessible sibling to the Land Cruiser 250, with a focus on retro-inspired design and moderate off-road capability, targeting buyers interested in the styling and image of overlanding but in a more compact, fuel-efficient format.
Toyota has not officially confirmed the vehicle’s name, powertrain details, or launch timeline. However, if the model is headed for production—as all signs suggest—it would compete with compact off-roaders like the Ford Bronco Sport, Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, and the upcoming Suzuki Jimny 5-door in various markets.
The company’s interest in reviving heritage nameplates—such as the return of the Land Cruiser 70 Series and the introduction of the Land Cruiser 250—aligns with this move. Toyota may aim to capitalise on strong brand equity among off-road enthusiasts while expanding its appeal to younger or more urban buyers looking for smaller SUVs with genuine off-road credentials.

Toyota has yet to release a full reveal or offer an official comment on the design leak. More details—including drivetrain options, interior configuration, and global availability—are expected to emerge later this year or in early 2026.
