The project includes the creation of civil infrastructure for EV charging stations, along with the supply and installation of substations and chargers.

Following the Delhi government's launch of inter-state electric bus services to two cities and plans for further expansion, it will also install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at the city's three major interstate bus terminals (ISBTs), officials were quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTC) has floated a tender for the supply and installation of chargers and the required infrastructure at the three ISBTs -- Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, and Anand Vihar. This is part of the Delhi's plan to fully convert its public transport fleet to electric vehicles within the next year and a half.

Project To Support Hundreds Of e-Buses

The estimated cost for the EV charging infrastructure at the three ISBTs is 16.99 crore, officials said. The project includes the creation of civil infrastructure for EV charging stations, along with the supply and installation of substations and chargers.

It will feature 1,600 KVA, 11KV / 433 V compact substations and 60KW and 240KW chargers, which are capable of charging hundreds of buses, an official explained.

"Tenders have been floated, inviting contractors approved by government agencies for the work. The civil and electrical works will begin in the next few months after successful bidding," the official added.

Expansion Critical For 8,000 E-Bus Target

Officials highlighted that expanding charging infrastructure is crucial as the Delhi government plans to add 8,000 e-buses by 2026. Currently, the city has 3,400 e-buses, with plans to increase that number to 6,000 in the coming months.

Interstate Electric Bus Routes Launched

On Thursday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off inter-state electric buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), running from Kashmere Gate Bus Terminal to Sonipat Bus Stand.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had inaugurated the first inter-state electric bus service between Delhi and Baraut. Kejriwal has already announced plans to resume DTC bus services connecting the national capital with NCR cities.

High-Capacity Charging Technology

The technical specifications of the planned charging infrastructure reflect the scale of Delhi's public transport electrification ambitions. The 240KW high-capacity chargers will enable rapid charging of electric buses, minimising downtime and ensuring fleet availability during peak operational hours.

The 1,600 KVA substations will provide the substantial electrical capacity required to simultaneously charge multiple buses at each terminal, addressing one of the key logistical challenges in operating large electric bus fleets.

Strategic Terminal Selection

The selection of Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan, and Anand Vihar ISBTs for initial infrastructure development represents a strategic approach to maximising coverage across Delhi's interstate transport network. These terminals serve as crucial hubs connecting the national capital with neighbouring states and National Capital Region (NCR) cities.

Kashmere Gate functions as a primary gateway for routes to northern destinations, whilst Sarai Kale Khan serves southern and eastern connections, and Anand Vihar caters to eastern and northeastern routes. The infrastructure development at all three locations will enable comprehensive electrification of interstate bus operations.

The ambitious timeline of achieving full fleet electrification within eighteen months positions Delhi at the forefront of India's public transport transformation. The coordinated development of both vehicle procurement and charging infrastructure demonstrates an integrated approach to sustainable urban mobility.

The expansion from the current 3,400 e-buses to 8,000 units by 2026 represents more than doubling the electric fleet size, requiring not only terminal charging facilities but also depot-based infrastructure to support overnight charging and maintenance operations.

The tender specifications requiring government-approved contractors ensures that the infrastructure development adheres to established quality and safety standards.
