India's push toward electric mobility seems to be getting momentum with Delhi securing the top position alongside Maharashtra and Chandigarh in NITI Aayog's first India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) which evaluates performance across three themes of EV adoption, charging infrastructure readiness and EV technology and innovation.
Niti Aayog's "India Electric Mobility Index 2024" report conducted a thorough evaluation of all Indian states and union territories using 16 specific indicators grouped under three primary categories: electric vehicle (EV) adoption rates, charging infrastructure development, and technological innovation in the EV sector.

The assessment highlights the strength of regional EV ecosystems, with the national capital and two major states seeing exceptional performance across multiple parameters.
Delhi and Maharashtra have established themselves as pioneers in transport electrification, leading the nation in converting traditional vehicles to electric alternatives.
The infrastructure readiness category showcases different regional strengths, with Haryana, Karnataka, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh emerging as leaders in establishing robust charging networks to support electric vehicle users.
The technology and innovation segment reveals a broader distribution of excellence, with Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, and Telangana distinguished as frontrunners in EV research and development initiatives.
The policy landscape shows progress, with 29 states and union territories having officially implemented EV policies. Additionally, four more regions have policies in draft stages, indicating continued expansion of supportive frameworks.
These regional policies are designed to accelerate local adoption through strategic incentives, regulatory frameworks, and location-specific approaches that complement national objectives.
India's EV sector experienced substantial growth throughout 2024, with private vehicle adoption reaching a significant milestone. Electric two-wheelers and cars achieved a 5.3 per cent adoption rate, resulting in more than 1.2 million new EV registrations during the year.
The supporting infrastructure has expanded correspondingly, with the country establishing over 25,000 public electric vehicle charging stations by December 2024, providing essential support for the growing EV user base.
